The cabin was a lovely get away. Very clean and comfy. The propane lights are really cool. When we were there the one in the kitchen wasn't working. We'd brought a lantern and there was another light source as well in the cabin so it was no big deal. We didn't hear or see any evidence of mice on our trip. The stove kept us nice and warm. Being off season it was very quiet around the cabin. i could see how you could get a lot of lookie-loos in busier months as it's right at a trailhead. I will come back here again.

A quiet cabin in the woods at a trailhead- a really nice place to stay. The instructions tell you that there is a lock on the driveway gate and another pair of locks on the back door of the cabin. We found only a single lock on the back door of the cabin and it used the code we had been sent for the gate lock that wasn't there. There were mouse droppings in the lower kitchen cabinets but we didn't see or hear any mice. Propane gaslights work as long as the mantle is intact. Close curtains to help the propane fireplace warm the place up but don't expect it to get much warmer than 65 or so in early spring.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend, with clear skys and lovely nordic skiing conditions around the cabin. the cabin was in pretty good order. Interior temperatures were a bit cold, never got above the low 60s, but far and above warmer and drier than on the outside for this cold week. My only complaints were not against the cabin itself but previous inconsiderate guests. One previous visitor had stuffed garbage under the sink rather than packing it out, and someone had decided to fill the cabin's guest log with a whole plethora of highly political content. Free speech is great, but lots of people from all kinds of beliefs and leanings come to this publicly owned retreat to find serenity. So that kind of behavior, bringing all the divisiveness of the outside world into this beautiful place can greatly detract from the experience for others. Please be considerate and respectful of this place so that everyone can continue to enjoy it as much as we have!

Perfect weekend getaway. Easy to access, so many activities to do both inside (entire dresser of games!) and outside (trails out your backdoor!) , and I love the luxury of a propane fireplace and stove. Better than I expected.

Cozy cabin!! Beautiful place to hunker down for a rainy weekend. Close to hiking trails and not too far from coast towns. Very clean. Will be going back

Gear cabin beautiful. Very crowded parking lot, one guy gives mushroom tours every day from there expect the parking lot to be completely full by 10am and then die out in the afternoon

The location is close to many amazing trails and has unique history. However, I do not recommend. It is spooky and close to a trail head parking lot so many times when youre in the yard, hikers stare at you and you dont feel like youre in a private cabin in the woods. The swimming hole nearby was the best part. We left early due to feeling unsafe.

Watch out for rat poison! Although we ultimately enjoyed our stay it got off to an unsettling start when we found unmarked sticks of rat poison loose in the dresser of the kids room and after a thorough search 11 other places easily accessible to children (but not easily noticeable to adults). The sticks (Fastrac Blox - we found the bucket under the sink) look like purple sidewalk chalk. I dont know if they were left by the USFS or by another guest but it seems like something families who stay in the cabin would like to know. The handbook mentions that there may be rat poison on-site but it lists a different product. The way this particular poison is being used appears contrary to the indications on the products safety data sheet which says, among other regulations & warnings, that it must be in a locked, labeled, child-proof container marked POISON and accessible only to the target animal and notes that it may be fatal if ingested or absorbed through the skin. On the plus side, we didnt hear any rodents so it seems to be working?

Had a great stay and enjoyed the hikes in the area! The cabin was warm and cozy and was cleaner than we expected (no fresh mouse poop).

Cabin was in terrible condition. Appears to be abandoned. Door lock batteries and thermostat batteries all dead. Mice poop everywhere with lots of mice inside the cabin at night. Disaster. Its been going downhill for years and now its there.

4 nights. Cabin is RIGHT AT the trailhead, and a stone's throw from the road. Lots of visitors banging on the door, peering through the windows, asking if I'm the Ranger. Asking about trail info, and seasonal closings. Also had a local getting funny, revving his truck engine while sitting in the street. Not brave enough to come on down to see what I thought about it, though. No lights in the kitchen at all though propane present. Tip: Close bedroom curtain, and hang a blanket between the kitchen and main room to optimize heat for the main room. Ranger Hole is worth the visit.

All appliances (heat, range and lights) worked as advertised. Wish there was running water and a dedicated out house though. The outhouse shared with the day hikers did not lock. The bed mattress covers are dingy and worn. Overall a great experience. And one more thing...we are foodies and Halfway Hous in Brinnon was below par. Homemade croutons on salid were rancid as was the pie crusts. Eating options in Quilcene are much better!

Propane heat and lighting. Cabin thermostat is turned down to 55 when unoccupied, but heats up quickly. Cabin is simple, clean, and comfortable: no fridge, running water, or electricity, but we knew that. kMight need to bring some more utensils if there's more than two of you Ranger Hole Trail (0.8 mi) down to the Duckabush River begins next to cabin; it's a nice walk.

This was such a peaceful getaway, no wifi, no cable, no electricity, and no water. Bring what you need. There are lots of games, puzzles, and books to look through, moss covered trees to wander through, and a beautiful river to walk to. The propane stove/heater was a cozy way to stay warm and the propane lights gave perfect ambiance. We didn't try to cook on the cooktop so can't comment to that. As I said bring all the water, cooking utensils, warm blankets, things you may need and be prepared for quiet restfulness. The pit toilet is not terrible as far as pit toilets go but it is a bit of a walk from the cabin so be prepared. I would definitely stay here again.

The place is great. Propane fireplace, stove, and lights worked fine. Make sure you bring a lighter for the lights and water for drinking and cleaning. There are plates cups, basic pans, and few utensils to use.

The downside is the trailhead right there. People will walk up to the cabin while you are in there and peek inside. Even though there are signs stating to not enter the fence.

Beautiful location that's close to anything you want to do in the Olympic Mountains. It was gorgeous and is close to the Halfway House Cafe which was an excellent find!

Amazing! Please keep it rustic. Never add electricity!

You might want to say what a “mantle” is or have a diagram on light Instructions. Might also need extra mantles for the ones that have holes. A snow shovel would be good too…we were snowed in and broom is tricky…!

Otherwise so awesome!!
The futon was hard to put away and I don’t think the oven worked. (That’s okay!)

I was hoping to learn who the people in the photos were too. So wonderful to see them and see all the journals. THANK YOU!!!

This was my third time staying here, and the cabin's charm still doesn’t disappoint. I read some of the previous negative reviews and I want to advise that this isn't a vrbo or airbnb, this is a facility the forest service is keeping open for equal access to the park. The cabin is historic and maintained by renters and the park rangers, and it's perfect if you are looking for a rustic experience that is loved by many (think car camping with a roof / oven / furniture). I don’t recommend this for people with expectations past that. I love this cabin and hope the USFS continues its legacy.
