We would definitely come back. The pictures do not do the place justice. The location/setting was incredible. We were there in October and enjoyed the colors. There is a lot of room in the cabin. The place was not well cleaned by the previous occupants (not a big deal). We saw a mouse in the kitchen. Consider bringing plastic tubs for your food.

The rental was clean, well supplied with utensils and appliances, the heating system worked well, and we appreciated the quiet. It's definitely one of my very favorites

We fully enjoyed our stay at the Ochoco Ranger Cabin. Its important to have realistic expectations going in, as it shows its age, and it will only be as clean as the prior renters left it, but it was more than adequate for us. The upstairs can smell a bit musty, which is resolved by opening the windows at both ends, but if you are sensitive to odors, you might want to stay downstairs. One thing to note, the sixth bed is a foldaway stored up in the attic. We had a great time exploring the area, checking out the Independent and Mother Lode mines, and saw a herd of wild horses on our way to Big Summit Prairie. The only person in our group with cell service at the cabin had AT&T, so we all jumped on his hotspot as needed. My Xfinity Mobile phone, which I believe uses the Verizon network, was useless. I had heard there was cell service at the water tower up the hill behind the cabin, so I hiked up to where the water tower once stood, but nothing. Undaunted, I continued to climb and was surprised to stumble across a gravesite at the base of a decorated pine tree, but still no service. Continuing up as far as I could go, I found a boulder on the edge of a cliff high above one of the Forest Service maintenance buildings, and as long as I stood on that particular rock, facing the building, I could refresh my web page! Success!

Cabin was clean and neat when we arrived. Floors were swept and vacuumed. Bathrooms were cleaned. Thank you to kind people who rented before us. The large kitchen had everything we needed for a stay with 6 adults and a few teens. There are plates, bowls, mugs and glasses. Kitchen appliances include coffee maker, grinder, toaster, microwave, oven and stove, electric griddle, mixer and crockpot. The refrigerator/freezer is nice and big. No signs of mice anywhere in the house. The large table is great for meals. Main door sticks a little and needs a little shove with your foot to open. Outside there is a picnic table and fire ring. This rental has a 2 car garage that has some firewood for burning and storing your things. The road has one house past the cabin. So, there is very little traffic. Occasionally you can hear a vehicle out on the main road.

This is a gem in the midst of a beautiful forest. I wanted to see and spend time with wild horses and I had the best experiences. All 4 days we were there exploring, we saw wild horses. The house was such a peaceful place to return to and make dinner. I definitely will be returning.

Not the sparkling, pristine experience you would get from an AirBnB, but such a great value for the money! Worth bringing some wet wipes, and I would have loved to have a Swiffer mop for cleaning prior to checkout. But it's cozy, warm, big, and in a perfect setting! Note: when we were there in Spring '25, it had a microwave and toaster, as well as an (untested but presumably functional) blender.

It was such a great place and experience. We stayed for three nights, so I am confident it's not haunted. Cleanliness depends on the guests before you, which can be risky, but as luck would have it, the place was clean and smelled nice. The living room is nice and cozy for reading, the kitchen is well-stocked for meal preparation, and the dining room table is perfect. The downstairs bed is a bit of a torture device (in a bad way), so consider bringing that camping pad as an alternative if it gets too rough. The toilet seems to be comedically small, so good luck if you are big or wide or both. Nighttime is quiet and dark; daytime is chill with random horses, deer, and birds galore. There are great trails and plenty of forest roads to cruise around on it that's your thing. Cell service was, unfortunately, fine (AT&T). Can't wait to come back!

Good location that is close to a snopark and other outdoor attractions and has full amenities but the home is in desperate need of repairs and has an overwhelming stench throughout. After having spent the last five Christmas breaks at this location, it is no longer worth visiting. Other renters also seem to be abusing this location (not cleaning, causing damage and stealing).

We had a wonderful time! If you are down with quaint but cozy, this is your spot. Cleanliness is somewhat dependent on the previous guest - be part of the solution and leave it nicer than you found it!

Nice to see a new refrigerator, stove, pots & pans and a knife block. Furnace and everything else worked well. The only unfortunate part is that some people leave junk behind, as well as their food. The forest service specifically says to take all food with you when you leave. We end up hauling it out with our own garbage.

Our group of 7 cross-country skiers had a delightful stay at the Ochoco Ranger House and skiing the local marked trails by the Walton Lake Sno Park, only 8 miles away. The kitchen is a bit worn but fully functional with cook stove, refrigerator and plenty of basic kitchenware and cleaning supplies. There is no dishwasher. A large wooden dining room table and a spacious knotty-pine paneled living room with comfortable Mission-style seating add to the charm. We spotted a herd of 10 wild horses several times enjoying the spring grasses along the Ochoco creek.

Great location as a base for exploring the area or just relaxing. We loved the living room and dining room but unfortunately the rest of the rooms need renovation/restoration. For the price charged I was expecting more reinvestment in the property

The cabin was warm and as clean as should be expected. It had easy access to the NF and it was fun to see the wild colts in the yard. Elk were all over as well.

The house has a ton of character and in a neat location but the cleanliness and repairs are hugely disappointing. The carpet is stained and filthy and should be replaced with hard wood. There was no vacuum provided. The fireplace was broken. I cancelled our other recreation.gov cabin reservation after this experience. There is a lot of potential for these unique stays but they need to me managed more efficiently and hands on.

The cabin has had deferred maintenance for too long. Paint was peeling off the kitchen and bedroom ceilings. The bath mat was glued to the floor in the downstairs bathroom which makes me wonder how long it's been since the floor was thoroughly washed. I'm not sure who determines what appliances are placed in the cabin but the oven runs at 150 degrees too low. The toaster didn't function well. There was a good selection of pots, pans and silverware though. The electric fireplace doesn't function well.
In the cabin listing you might mention folks bring an extra blanket as the cabin gets chilly - most folks bring a sleeping bag for their bedding, but an extra blanket could be useful too.
I was so glad to see the grungy dining room carpet had been replaced. Now the carpets in the halls and bedroom need cleaning or replaced with the same material as in the dining room.
This year we had tons of snow and a wonderful time skiing around the Walton Lake area. We saw the wild horses and many deer.

The cabin was cute and cozy, but absolutely infested with mice. We figured that there was a possibility of mice when booking a remote cabin in the winter, but this was so much worse than we anticipated. There was a very large and very dead mouse in the center of the dining room, mouse droppings in EVERY room (including on the kitchen counter), and a live one who joined us for breakfast in the kitchen. The location of the cabin is great, but I would not recommend unless you want to risk obtaining hantavirus.

Had a great time at the cabin. Could have used a bit more heat as it wasn’t quite keeping up with the cold. Went cross-country skiing up the road at Walton lake and had an overall wonderful time.
