Highly recommend Crabtree Falls, Setrock Falls & Roaring falls trails. Setrock & Roaring Fork are gentle. Elevation change with Crabtree. Be sure to research them before you set out.
Mt Mitchell Trail is not for beginners. 3600+ feet in elevation gain in 5.6 miles. You need to be prepared with fitness, water & food. Hiking poles highly recommended. To enhance your enjoyment - take the pressure off & put a vehicle at the top at Mt. Mitchell State Park. You can do this the night before - be sure to fill out a registration form & leave it in the vehicle - it is free. This allows you to take your time hiking up - if you do it & have time - then sure hike back down - but knowing you don't have to hike back down allows you to enjoy the journey of getting there.
Happy Trails - and thank you to the wonderful staff at Briar Bottom, Black Mountain Campgrounds & Mt. Mitchell State Park - and the volunteer trail maintainers!!
