Black Mountain Campground is a wonderful destination if you want to get away from the busy world. There is absolutely no internet connection. There are no grocery stores nearby so plan accordingly. Most of the campsites are large and pretty private. There is not a bad season to camp at Black Mountain Campground. Spring has flowers, newts and fireflys. Summer has long days, Toe River wading and cool nights. Autumn has color, dry days and cool clear nights. All seasons have hiking trails, fly fishing, lovely nights around a campfire and bears. It's a very good place. Don't mess with the bears. They look slow and not very bright but that is an illusion. They are big, strong, fast, extremely smart and always hungry.

This is a really family friendly campground. The bathrooms are clean. The showers are hot. The camp hosts are always fantastic. The short walk to the river is amazing. Not to mention the waterfall, thats a 20 minute hike away from the campground.

Relaxing, quiet mid May for 4 nights. A bit cool but we had electric site. Enjoyed walking the trails! Saw a bobcat!

I paid for a site with electric and unfortunately it had a short in it and didnt work properly. The hosts did not bother to drive their golf cart over to look at it for the six days I was there. I was supposed to be there for 10 days but I left early because it was too hot for me without my AC and no refrigerator working. No one even bothered to offer to bring me ice and I had to walk in the heat all the way to the office each day to buy a bag and carry it back. Why do they have golf carts if not to assist people especially those that are experiencing dreadful and unexpected conditions due to their lack of maintenance. There are so many people breaking rules that the hosts dont pay attention to and it infringes on other peoples camping experience. I had to again go all the way to the host site outside of the camping circle near the office to get help when vagrants with vicious dogs kept parking right at the edge of my campsite. I was trapped as I have a dog and the vicious dog kept leaping half way out of his window to attack my dog. It is rare to even see the hosts going around the campground checking on people. the head hosts there treat people as if they are Somehow less than them. This campground used to be amazing and unfortunately the hosts that are now there have driven out all of the regulars and locals from visiting . It appears they would rather have their wealthy out-of-state friends come in and populate the campground rather than the locals. I say this because they bend over backwards for anybody that comes in with a fancy rig from out of state but if youre local they dont help you and treat you as less than. Its quite devastating because we all love the campground so much its a beautiful place but the hosts make it so miserable that you just dont want to stay there. This has been reported last year to the corporate office but nothing has changed.

The lead hosts of this campsite or toxic people and they have driven out all of the locals. I have provided my input to management on their behavior and how it is driving away the regulars but nothing has changed. It's not safe and it's not maintained. The hosts do not ever check on campers to make sure all is well. This is really important when you are so far from the main roads and they have fully restricted internet usage. You have to walk for miles to get a message for help. During Memorial Day there was a gunshot inside the campground. The hosts were told it was a bottle in the fire but everyone around it said no way it was a gun shot. The people were not removed. I felt very unsafe. Vagrants come into the camp to shower and no one tells them to leave. People run generators all day and no one tells them not to. People drive 30 mph through the loop and no one stops them. The lead hosts pick and chose what rules to apply to whom and unfortunately they impose bogus rules on good people and then let their friends stay for free!

I would not recommend this campground to anyone wiht the current onsite manager/hosts. It is unsafe and an unhappy place.

We have been going there for many many years . The host are very nice and helpful. The bath houses are very clean there are hiking trails to walk on . Theres a waterfall you can hike to very easily . It borders the Toe River where kids and adults enjoy playing in . Theres a hiking trail from the campground you can hike up to Mt Mitchell . Its a primitive camp ground and people from all around comes to camp .

The Find Outdoors personnel are fantastic. Roger and Diane really care about your experience. The bathrooms are very clean. Trailhead to Mt. Mitchell at the campground which was great for an early start. Plenty of nice 2-5 mile walks right at the campground.

Great hosts, clean restrooms and well kept grounds and campsites.
Waterfalls and trails to explore. Lock up your food in the car at night as you are in a bear sanctuary.

The three best things about this campground are: 1) camp hosts, 2) location, 3) cleanliness. The camp hosts are super friendly and happy to provide great information on hiking trails, things to do, or just provide balls and frisbees for the kids to play with. They also have various and sundry items, including ice cream, for sale at the office. The location is outstanding - a gorgeous campground right next to the South Toe River where you can fish, do short hikes to waterfalls, or big hikes to Mt. Mitchell. The facilities are extraordinarily clean and the water is warm for showers.

We visited in our travel trailer and stayed at the site w/electricity. Note that there are no water or sewer hookups, but there is a dump station about a mile back up the road. You can get water in the campground for your fresh water tank if you want, but we just dry camped. Of course, not an issue if you're tent camping.
