No power and very little firewood. Beautiful views but no power and little firewood made it somewhat unpleasant

Location gets a 5 - unfortunately care by BLM drops the score. Axolotl cabin is a great recreational experience, which is why it books up in 5 minutes. The cabin view is fantastic, the hiking opportunities superb. Just be aware the items depending on the solar system (refrigerator, oven, vacuum cleaner, etc.) may not work. Come prepared - and bring your own cleaning supplies and TP.

We have been to 16 different forest service cabins and this was our first rental through BLM. This was our favorite cabin of all our rentals! Just the story alone of how this cabin came into BLM management is amazing (you'll have to rent the cabin to read the story)! The views are just superb! Beauty, peace and serenity are all around. This place can really capture you on a spiritual level if you let it. The setting is just incredible! And the cabin itself is very well constructed. Comfortable beds, a nice, very well stocked kitchen and open living area with huge windows. And the accessible outhouse is so convenient, the closest to the cabin of any of our prior rentals.Be sure to get up early one morning and enjoy the sunrise. We also spent a day in Virginia City. Check it out if you have time. Everything there is so well preserved. We took a tour there on a vintage fire truck from 1941 and had an excellent dinner at Wells Fargo Steakhouse. We also enjoyed a wicked thunder and lightning storm one night. We were without power on the last day. Be prepared to be without power if you have some cloudy days. Also, avoid turning on the overhead lights at night if you can as the moths will take over. We only used our flashlights as needed, otherwise kept it completely dark. We also did not charge our cell phones in the outlet in the kitchen as that can really drain the solar electricity (we brought our solar charger).Much to our surprise there was very little wildlife during our stay. But the beauty of the area made up for it. Such a stunning location. We will definitely be back someday. What a gem this place is! Enjoy every moment of your time here if you are lucky enough to get a reservation. This is a place that is truly unforgettable.

Beautiful cabin! The road from the Ennis side was rough, but the Virginia City Side was quite smooth. The cabin itself is set up nicely, well stocked, great for recreating. Easy walk to twin lakes. Nice fire pit area just uphill from the cabin. It has solar power, although it wasn’t working when we were there. Be prepared to be power free!! The stove is propane and worked well. Great outdoor picnic table on the deck along with indoor table and chairs. There really only are beds for 6 tops. Queen, single bunk bed, and double futon. You could bring cots for additional people if wanted. There was a sheet on the futon but it had mouse droppings, so we didn’t use that at all. Cabin could use a little more attention cleaning by the renters. It was clear no one had swept after at least the last visit. Clean up after yourself to keep these places open and usable!!

This cabin is our little get away. It’s such a great location and it’s always clean. So many activities around from fishing to hiking to dirt biking!

We had an amazing time at Axolotl Cabin. The location is beautiful and the cabin was surprisingly clean and well-stocked. The kitchen had pretty much everything we needed for utensils, cookware, etc. There is one outlet in the kitchen that we were able to use for recharging my camera. We had a great time exploring the lakes and looking for Axolotls. I hope we can return next year!

Awesome stay at Axolotl Cabin! Amazing views, campfires, and sunsets. Spent time on the lake on the SUP looking for Axolotls, with no luck. Thought we saw one, but found out it was just a sculpin, which are numerous. FYI - the stove/oven is new and works great! Not working so great is the futon bed frame. It needs repair, but sort of works. The queen bed is comfortable, and the one bunk bed is fun for the kids.

I have been coming to Axolotl cabin for over 10 years, and it is a favorite, almost spiritual place for me. The views and the solitude are extrodinary. The improvements the BLM has made in the cabin make the stay even more enjoyable.
