Wonderful campground along the Potomac. Beautiful black walnut trees provide ample shade.

This is a small campground, right on the river. We got in late at night, and in the morning were so surprised and happy to see that the River was feet away. Lots of wildlife - deer, turkeys, woodpeckers, geese, rabbits. The tunnel trail is under construction (you can’t come out of the end of the tunnel but you can go all the way through), but it was still wonderful. The trail overtop has amazing views. We were very close to town and stopped at Amanda’s restaurant, which was great. The only thing I would point out is that there isn’t a full bath house, just port-a-potty’s, so plan accordingly. I’d love to come back.

This was a paid site for which we had an advanced reservation. We were shocked to find that the water pump handle had been removed, even though no indication of such status had been provided when making the reservation and paying in advance. The status of the water supply should be indicated to those making reservations. We would have been better off staying at the hiker/biker site 0.9 mile away for free!

We had a quiet two nights of camping (Saturday/Sunday) because the Boy Scouts camped next to us had just finished a 20 mile hike! Good to note that you have to walk a short distance to the camp site from the parking lot—these are not pull up your car to unload your gear sites. The hiking trail up and around then through the tunnel has very scenic views of the river, and is well worth it—have a light with you as the tunnel is long and dark.

This was an unfortunate experience given that the Paw Paw Tunnel Campground Recreation.gov website gave it wonderful reviews and made it appear that it was a quiet and tranquil location. The location would appear to be remote, however, the campground is right next to a very busy 2-lane highway that is heavily used until after 10:00 at night. Another issue was that the campground layout on Recreation.gov misconstrues the locations of each campsite. We chose campsite 10 because the site map showed it was removed from the other sites, as well our reservation stated that only every other campsite would be occupied during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the campsite was booked to capacity for that weekend, not allowing for physical distancing - the campsite next to ours was less than 15 ft from us. So, we had no privacy at all. The campsite and entrance to the C&O canal and towpath trail uses the same parking lot as the campsite and becomes completely full early in the morning, therefore becoming more lively and loud. Overall, the campsite, at least when we visited, was not a serene or relaxing experience.
On a positive note, the area is absolutely beautiful and the campground is situated along the Potomac River. The C&O Towpath Trail is an easy walk from the campground and the by-pass trail provides a wonderful overlook of the Potomac River and valley. The Paw Paw Tunnel is amazing and an engineering work of art. (Don't forget your flashlight to walk through it). This site would be a great day trip from the Washington DC area.

Mobile Data Speed Map
#123
If there are speed tests submitted for a campground the campsite icons will be colored based on the average download speed and the border will be colored based on the average upload speed.
In this example Campsite #123 has very good download speeds and decent upload speeds. If a campsite has a solid yellow color it means there was no data speed detected in the test(s). Clicking on a campsite icon reveals more details.
