We enjoyed the peaceful, lazy vibe of NIRA during the week.

I’ve gone here during years of drought and seen parched landscape. This year was a complete transformation. The miracle of the 2023 winter has made the river and the mountains dreamlike. The road into Nira is worse than ever though. No longer a free campground Nira is cleaner and well run. Come here to see a green paradise.

My choice to rate this four stars can be summed up in three words: Location, location, location. This campground's lovely location in an extremely isolated river valley makes it a sublime experience. This is literally the end of the road, so other than hikers parking to go into the San Rafael Wilderness there's no traffic. There's lots of shade and every site has a fire ring, picnic table, and a pedestal grill. When I was there the creek was still flowing cold and clear, and in some places was 2 or 3 feet deep -- enough that people were taking dips in it. The days were a bit hot but the nights were cool, with very dark skies. Hiking trails depart from here along the creek, and hiking to one of the nearby walk-in campgrounds and back is an easy day hike even for an out-of-shape person like me. ;)RVers should note that this is mainly a tent campground -- it's possible to park an RV alongside any of the sites, but you can't drive in. We had a van camper and had about a 50 foot walk from where we parked to our fire ring. The road in from the Cachuma Saddle is very narrow and badly potholed. Most passenger cars should be able to handle it, but large RVs aren't going to fit. Happy Canyon Road has a rough dirt section; coming in via Figueroa Mountain Road is longer and requires a steeper climb, but is much smoother. Motorcyclists should be very careful on the creek fords -- depending on the route you'll take, you'll need to cross at least two, and they're extremely slippery. The flies and gnats were annoying. They didn't seem to bite, just swarmed around us constantly. Bug repellent helped. The toilet facilities hadn't been serviced in a while and there was no toilet paper in the men's. I suspect this might be because of the COVID-19 pandemic -- these campgrounds were only starting to re-open. There was no camp host.
