The campsite was lovely... except for poison oak everywhere. Step one foot in any direction outside the small dirt area of where our tent was, and you're knee deep in poison oak.

We enjoyed our stay. Campsites were beautiful, weather was great. We reserved a campsite for 2 cars and 4 people. However when we got there the camp hosts charged us for the second car. I dont understand why is we reserved it and if it was an extra charge it should have been an initial fee at the time we made the reservation. We like that it is dog friendly but the bathrooms did not have any toilet paper and the trash cans were full. This is not indicative of daily upkeep. We want to come back when campfires are allowed but because of the things mentioned we are hesitant.

Quiet and beautiful experience! Just did a weeknight stayover and off to work in the morning. We have a camper and only a few sites can accommodate our rig. My husband and I had to come drive around before we made any reservations to see which sites would work. It would be nice if the campgrounds could put together a campground map and site pictures. Other than that, we cant wait to come back!

Not too many campsites in the park was really nice. Fire rings were great for roasting hot dogs, smores, and relaxing in the evenings. Fires aren't always allowed so be sure to check before going. Appreciated the comments on this site about campsite numbers -- this helped us book a site that wasn't too close to neighbors and had shade. Expect non-flushing toilets (which were clean) and bringing your own water. We used water from home for washing our hands, etc. The oaks with lichen are beautiful and the hike up Cerro Alto is not to be missed. I recommend hiking boots or footwear with grip. We are locals and do hikes like Bishops, Madonna, etc., and this hike had a lot more rocks/shale on the trail which caused slipping on the way down. It's not awful, just that hiking boots would have been nice. You'll see experienced hikers on the trail with good footwear and pants due to poison oak and tics. The hike has areas with full sun so we were glad we started earlier in the day before it got too warm. Super great location. You can hike Cerro Alto one day, and then visit Morro Bay to get some saltwater taffy at Crill's the next.

This small campground has a variety of sites for different needs, including very private, very small, tent-only, and some adjacent sites for those with larger families. No showers, no hookups, just lots of trees, a creek, poison oak in abundance (!) and hiking trails that run the gamut from mild to ohmygod. Close to both Morro Bay and Atascadero, but far enough away to feel "wild" in a riparian setting. We love it.

It was way cleaner and nicer than it used to be. The host Anthony was super friendly and helpful, as was his wife. Bathrooms clean and well stocked. Sucks about the fire ban but that has nothing to do with Cerro Alto.

This is a wonderful place to camp! My campsite was under the oaks, next to the creek, quiet, and peaceful. I had my two dogs with me and they also enjoy this site very much. Hiking during the day and targazing at night and just relaxing under the oaks are my favorite things to do. I also visited the avocado ranch in Morro Bay on this trip and brought home some beauties. The campground hosts are friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Thanks for a wonderful experience!

Campsites are mostly spread apart/away from each other. Be prepared, some sites require a bit of a walk uphill. Pit toilets clean. Great network of trails out of the campground.

Cerro Alto is a starting point for great hiking experiences, and you can choose the length and height of your hike along well-marked trails. The summit of Cerro Alto itself--a good long climb from the campground--provides an exhilarating view of the central coast. The campsites are situated along a tree-lined creek that provides a relaxing riparian ambience but beware: There is a LOT of poison oak along the edges. No "hook-ups," but picnic tables and fire pits (check for seasonal prohibitions on fires) are provided in each site. Sites vary in size and level. From the campground, it's a short drive to the much busier coastal sites and, in the other direction, to the charming town of Atascadero with its restaurants and stores.
