This campground is one of the prettier ones I've been to in California. When we were here in May, there was tons of water running through the creek near the campsite. The sites are covered with shade from oak trees and most of them are near the creek which is nice. We highly recommend staying here if you have an opportunity.

Car alarm was off at night for almost 2 hours at night! It was ridiculous. Other people left the campground. Host didn't do anything to fix it. A bunch of trees have cut on site #12. There was pretty much no shade at that site. Ground was not flat to pitch a tent.

The last time I went to Wheeler Gorge was when I was a small child- about 40 years ago- so I didn't really know what to expect. We had site #12, which is very close to the creek. The site itself is one of the larger sites there, with partial shade. A canopy is recommended if you choose this site. The camp hosts were very welcoming and helpful. Despite the restrooms being pit toilets, they were pleasantly clean and the odor did not waft across the campground. The creek was low, but we were still able to find a neat spot where the water went up to my knees. The kids enjoyed the water and playing with the rocks. We had a nightly skunk visitor in our site, which was kind of fun, as I'd never seen a living skunk in person. No spraying, thank goodness! The little guy was just passing through. Our camp neighbors had a visit from the resident bear one night, but it was chased off rather quickly. We never got a chance to see him. At night you can hear the soothing chirps of the crickets, and then a little later in the night, you can hear some frogs croaking. The highway is quite close to the campground, so passing cars and motorcycles can be heard throughout the day and night. We were well prepared with our own drinking water, having known ahead of time that the water faucets were no longer in service. There are no dead tree branches on the ground to use for firewood, so bring your own or purchase a bundle from the camp hosts. I think they were $10 a bundle. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and left Wednesday morning and I think those few days was the right amount of time to camp in Wheeler Gorge. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I can see us visiting there again.

Loved this secluded spot east of Ojai only down side is there’s no water at the campsite only the creek that runs nearby. It gets very dark at night and really gives you a remote wilderness experience.

Amazing and beautiful place to camp and conveniently located to great trails and the quaint town of Ojai.
