Didnt interact with campground staff more than entering and the occasional wave. Campground was fairly clean with a good amount of dumpsters and bathrooms. Wildlife here due to the normally flowing stream. Keep it clean and do not litter.

This campground is gorgeous and perfectly out of the way (and cell range), while not being a long drive from LA. We had a blast in the end of March 2021 as we got both cool and warm weather. When it's cool, the evening temperature gets into the 30sF and when it's warm in Wheeler, the temperature in the daytime reaches the 80sF. This meant winter coats at the fireside on the cooler nights and many, many bugs during the day on the warmer days. So just be prepared for these extremes. Bring the bug spray! The camp host was super helpful and very accommodating! We had trailers dropped off and picked up for us, which was very convenient. We brought our dog and she was perfectly welcomed by all. We wished the spigots had been working, but alas there is no running water other than the creek. So bring lots of your own potable water. That said, you can fill portable rinse kit/pumps for dishwashing at the creek and that's quite convenient. The creek is perfect for children of all ages and kids from other campsites played with each other easily. Let them know there are many frogs to try to catch! And the area is perfect for hammocks so make sure you bring yours (and your books of course!).

This place is a case study in have's and have not's. Some sites are located right on the creek, spacious as they are idyllic. Other sights are located off the creek in awkwardly compact arrangements. I was in the latter. The compactness of these sites would be more bearable if they were not located so closely together. I had two neighbors adjacent to me, one of whom I didn't have a barrier with to declare where our site ended and their's began. It's teeny, it's tiny, prepare for this possibility and you won't be as disappointed as I was.Once the sardine effect wore off though, we got to enjoying the campsite area. The creak was fantastic, and there are a few areas of it that run around 3 feet deep. It can be very easy to spend the entire time in the creak and never leave the campsite. However, the site is a 30 min drive to beautiful trails and other hiking destinations that make it enjoyable. There is no running water at this site, so bring plenty of water to wash your hands and drink. Town is a 30 min round trip away and provides ice and water jug refills (IT GETS HOT)All in all, this was a fine site, especially on such short notice. If I were to ever return though, I would definitely research my site before doing so.

Pretty great for car camping. Not secluded but the creek was a lot of fun. Nice hiking trails nearby.

A couple of the ranger assistants (not sure what they're called) were extremely rude to our group, which included me and about ten 20-somethings. When we mentioned we were celebrating a birthday, they immediately assumed we would be loud, drunk, and crazy and kept admonishing us before we even reached the sites to set up. What are we, high schoolers? Not only that, they also did not give us a refund on previously reserved sites that we switched to other sites and charged us again - so we were out close to $50.The large group across from us who had more than a dozen people had kids and babies that were constantly screaming and completely unsupervised. When the assistants came around to check the toilets, I went and talked with the assistant who was the rudest to our group and pointed out how quiet we were compared to the people across from us. I also chewed her out for making baseless assumptions just because we had a group of young people. We'd like to go back here, but the assistants obviously need sensitivity training along with training as to how to handle money transactions. They probably pocketed the $50 cash we had to give them.BTW, in the summer (June through September), the bugs are HORRIBLE. As are all the screaming kids running around unsupervised.
