We camp here right after school gets out, every year because we find it so peaceful. Camping under the large Oak trees, hearing the frogs croak at night, relaxing in the hammocks during the day, and watching the bluejays and squirrels are the best part of this site. The stream runs right behind this site, and this year there were pollywogs aplenty. Be careful though, a skunk has set up his den under the huge rock between the table and the road. He doesn't bother you but will go through your stuff if you forget to lock it up. Be sure to stop by the visitor center across the street (open Sat & Sun only 9-3), they have history about the surrounding flora and fauna. There are plenty of hiking trails very close to the campground, in fact one starts right at the back. Take plenty of water, because you will drink more than your usual daily intake during the summer. Take plenty of firewood too, because the nights can be chilly during summer, depending on the tricks of Mother Nature (blazing day, chilly night)! Bug spray or natural repellent is a MUST! This year we used tiki torches with citronella and it did great for keeping the mosquitos away.

Loved the experience. Fell asleep to the sound of a chorus of frogs and the sound of raindrops on the tent after a lovely fire. The nature walk the next day was glorious and refreshing. It felt like longer but we stayed 24 hours. The only thing I would like is if the water spigots were operational, but there were barely any other people there, so that was minor.

Wheeler Gorge is a go to Spring camping spot. Water flows all over throughout the campground. The nature hike out of the campground has a nice display of Wildflowers. Late Spring and Early Summer after wet Winters the creek is really great for the kids. Be ready for bugs and watch out for ticks. Although most sites are very shady, a few are really sunny and would not be fun in the Summer. Great hosts work here!

Wheeler Gorge is a fantastic little hideaway! Not all of the sites are tent friendly, but if you get in on the upper loop, near the river you will have enough space for at least 2 large tents. This loop is also the quietest and furthest from Highway 33, not that any spot is particularly far from the highway. Bring plenty of water, there is no running water (potable or otherwise) within the campground. The Nature Trail is a nice little addition, check it out for a quick diversion!

The staff at the Ranger Station (only open weekends) are always a joy to talk with and learn from, especially great with kids. Bring shovels and buckets to play in the creek water. If you are into geocache hunts there are a few easy finds along the Wheeler Gorge Nature Trail accessible by foot from the north end of the campground. Beware no running water and no cell service at the campground, learn to recognize Poison Oak and bring your favorite bug repellant in summer.

Fantastic campground. Site 41 is the best campsite if youโ€™re in a trailer or RV under 22 feet. The site backs right up to the creek. The camp hosts were really nice. We went the day before a big rain so the creek was full. All in all, great experience
