Wheeler Gorge was a perfect place for a weekend getaway. Feels like you are remote but very close to town if you want to grab any necessities. The pit toilets were very clean. There are various sites for both large and small groups. The camp hosts were so friendly and accommodating. Can't wait to stay here again.

On the plus side, there are pit toilets every 100 feet or so making the use of a bathroom at any time extremely convenient. On the negative side, the pits are extremely large and clearly cleaned at the smallest frequency monthly. The entire campground stinks of sewer gas day and night and there is no escaping. There was not a single site throughout the campground spared from the stench and toxicity of sewer gas. This was our first and last visit to this campground and both my wife and I left after two nights with headaches and a lasting feeling of having been poisoned. This would have been a wonderful campground otherwise but I have no expectation that they will ever properly maintain the bathrooms and thus I recommend this campground be avoided by an persons who breath air and appreciate oxygen. Steer clear!

It was pretty crowded and consequently load. My original site (56) was dank and there was no flat spot for a tent. I switched to a quieter more open (less dank) and flatter spot (33) and things did quiet down when the weekend crowd dissipated. It was nice to camp outside of town and as far a Ojai goes, lots to do and see. Beautiful area, lots of hiking and biking.

This campground is pretty awesome. It's perfect for taking little ones on their first camping trip as it's not too far from the cute little city of Ojai. Loved the stream access. Just make sure you bring plenty of water.

Now to why I gave only 2 stars. Site 56 is TERRIBLE. The host even grimaced when they saw our site number. It is on the side of a hill with enough flat area for only a single person tent. We were slanted for our entire stay. Cooking on a slant cleaning on a slant sitting around the campfire on a slant.

If you can get a reservation on any site but 56 take it. Great campground.

Our campsite, #56, was very small and we had to set our tents up in the parking stall which was difficult. Other than that, beautiful location with nice people at check in.

Host was awesome, restrooms were clean, and the camp sites were spaced out enough to feel secluded. Great experience overall.

Our site was at a slant and not much room for a tent let alone 2. We woke up at the bottom of our tent as we rolled down the hill while sleeping. This was the worst site but our neighbors were nice and the ranger gave us a lot of info during our stay for next time. It was great to have a stream by the campsite to swim in.
