Although there was no running water or showers at the camp, the bathrooms were impeccably clean. We also took 2.5 gallon jugs of drinking water with water dispensing spouts that replaced the lack of running water. We used them for drinking, washing dishes, hands, etc. and they worked great. You can do a sponge bath with environmentally friendly wet wipes to replace showers. There is a rocky stream that runs through the campground, and we took the opportunity to wade in it while wearing protective footwear, like slippers or Crocs. It's deep enough to sit in in some spots (3 - 4 feet). A few miles south of the campground, there are deeper swimming pools from the river nearby. Swimmers park their cars on the side of the road and spend a few hours cooling off in the natural pools. I would look for a campsite number in the 50's or 60's to have one with access to the creek and the sound of running water at night. It's really a beautiful place. We had blue scrub jays and woodpeckers coming into our camp looking for food handouts. They are such beautiful birds, and they'll tear open a bag of chips or other snack with their beaks to steal a few if not properly stowed. We really had a great time at Wheeler Gorge and we'll return for another trip soon. I highly recommend it.

We stayed at sites 4/5 and we all had a great time. It's very peaceful and has lots of trees. A short walk away is the stream, which moved smoothly as it overflowed on the road and cascaded on the side of it, making waterfalls. Our boys, ages 9, 5 and 2, loved playing there even in the rain. Some water got into our tent but we brought a really large plastic sheet that we put on top of the rainfly. That also helped keep the inside a little warm at night. We walked around and noticed the single sites were on the small side so it was good that we booked a double because we had a 10-man tent. Our site had some rocks and boulders around, mostly near the fire ring and BBQ grill. Our sons would climb on them and play. There is no running water at camp. The restrooms are pit toilets that are well-maintained and always stocked with toilet paper. No sink or anywhere you can wash your hands/dishes. We knew that beforehand so we brought a big jug with water. When we were running low, my husband made trips to the stream and filled Kirkland water bottles with water. He boiled it at the campfire before putting it in the big jug. So we had the fire burning all day and well into the night. It was nice having very warm water for washing our hands and pans. The camp host sells firewood. Our site was very close to highway 33 but it didn't really bother us that you could hear cars occasionally passing by at night and early morning. We also didn't notice any poison oak in our site nor in the areas we walked but we mostly stayed on paved roads. We would go back here, maybe in the beginning of summer.

Really pretty grounds. Our little path down to the creek felt private. It was special. I always forget how close camping slips are to each other, but that's the nature of state campgrounds, I guess. The hosts were protective of the camp and that made me feel safe, which was important as we were two women camping. They came around once and asked if we needed more wood, which was cool. We had a great time and I hope to be back. Thank you.

One of the best camping experiences we had. Staff are super friendly. The sites are small so if you have a tent that is 10x14” like us, book a double site. Also, bug spray and citronella is highly recommended.
