We and our two dogs had a lovely time! We were the only ones at the camp ground which was great but also a little lonely as we enjoy meeting other campers. That said, it had rained for a few days prior so the streams were flowing (late December) and there were places we could not hike as a result. But we did head up toward Mt Lucia(?) which was a great hike. We only hiked for a couple hours so nowhere near the 12 mile round trip possible to the peak. Incredible bouldering possibilities and amazing views and we will almost certainly return. Know that the site is great but primitive, with pit toilets and no water. Bring it in or go thirsty. Main road was washed over due to rain but alternate dirt road available and in good shape. Took about 1:15 from Hwy 101 to the site, 1 hour if main road not closed. Sites 5-8 are all cool. Site 4 has great vistas and is closest to the toilets but def not a deal breaker. (Odd note: There was someone shooting off a few rounds for some unknown reason. Never felt unsafe, just weird and it was over as soon as it began. Never saw them. Deer hunting season is Aug/Sept, FYI if that bothers youand you look like a deer)Basically dont tell anyone that this is a nice camp ground. ;-)

beautiful, idyllic, spacious, pristine
drive involves going through military base (spooky to me) but then one arrives at beautiful oak forest with epic rock formations
great campsite

Second time here in a month’s time. Campground is great, especially sites 5-8 if you like coverage and a forest vibe. The area is pretty magical and has spectacular views all around. Trails nearby, watering holes everywhere, amazing rock formations and fossils to be found. Plenty of variation in the environment if you explore around and even drive a ways away to see what’s nearby. Easy access to California’s most remote mission, drive through an Army facility, add a couple water crossings to make it a proper adventure. Did it in a Nissan.
