There is a long, unpaved road to get to the site. We arrived late at night and had a bit of trouble locating Site 5 (it's a bit tucked away, and the site numbers aren't easily visible, especially at night). We stayed one night and then backpacked into Pine Valley the next day. For the night at China Camp Campground, we brought plenty of water (none is available at the site). Site 5 had a nice flat stretch for pitching 2 tents. It was nice and quiet, not crowded at all, and had easy access to the Pine Valley trailhead.

The camp ground is deep in the forest higher up in the mountains; I took spot #5, which is on the far end of loop one, further away from the others. The ground is not very even but that's not a huge problem. The drive up is dirt and there are some rougher patches; you might want to be cautious if you have a sedan and it has a low bottom. That said, the drive was a lot of fun and the mountain was beautiful. Cell and internet connection was spotty on the way up but I have both cell and internet at the campground. The bathroom was tiny and not very clean but was ok for one night's stay.

I liked it, the road is quite an adventure but passable when dry. I’d definitely go again.
