I have camped at several NPS campgrounds and this campground was not quite up to par. Site 128 was actually great and I would recommend it if you are tent camping at Sunset. You have a great amount of space behind you as you are on an outer loop, your neighbors are not so close that you can hear their conversations, and you are a decent proximity to water and the bathroom. The drawback is that you are close to the highway so you have traffic noise in the morning. The campground is small and quite crowded during peak season and there is no camp host or ranger around in the evenings. This creates a situation where people are free to party until midnight because there is no enforcement of the rules. The NPS would make so much money if they made rounds at 10pm with warnings, then returned at 10:30 to write citations. If they did this, they would have money to better maintain the bathrooms. If I were to do this trip all over again, I would camp at Lodgepole in Sequoia. I'm not sure it would be much better but I won't be returning to Sunset.

Not just understaffed but witnessed total disregard for enforcing basic campground regulations. Generators, music and a big-screen video/outdoor movie running until 10:45 pm. Did not see a ranger, volunteer or camphost for the first 48 hours of my stay. The last 2 days of my stay I saw 1 ranger drive through the campground and he never stopped his vehicle or got out of his vehicle = never engaged with public at any time and totally ignored open bear boxes and food sitting on tables that were not attended. Drove through another campground in Canyon View area and witnessed same sloppy campground conditions.Spent 6 days in Yosemite the previous week and experienced an excellently managed campground with rangers or volunteers or wildlife division staff frequently monitoring ALL their campgrounds multiple times each day and tactfully enteracting with campers and requiring that campground rules be followed. Who ever is responsible (supervisor) for campground management and enforcement protocol in Kings Canyon should be embarrassed AND replaced. Can't blame everything on staff shortages as everyone experiences that and still finds a way to professionally manage a National Park campground. Your Nayional agency should be setting the standards rather than being a poor example.I spent 42 years directing a County natural resource agency that managed both wildlife areas and high use public recreation areas we would never allow our services to dip to level I experienced at the Kings Canyon campground facilities.

What a experience and what a beautiful camp site! It's well maintained! The sunsets are quite pretty after a long day spent hiking. Can't wait to come back!

It was a great camp site. It is clean and safe. I like it because you can easily walk to the Grant Grove market. A two mile hike to the Grant Tree. A 30 minute drive to Sentinel Campground which you can swim in the river. On the way, you can also visit Hume lake. Overall, I love it and plan to go back in the Spring.

We love SeKi and have had great experiences every time. This was our first stay at Sunset Campground. We camped at Dorst Creek prior to that and would say Sunset is our first choice from now on. We loved the views, the shade at our campsites and the cleanliness of the restrooms (we camped during Covid-19). You would not be disappointed. Campsites 22,128,130 are sites I recommend with good shade and ample space for your kiddos to run around.

Located right near Grant Grove and hiking distance to 2 waterfalls plus a lake; this gorgeous, well-kept, (clean bathrooms) campground was the perfect high altitude doorway to Kings Canyon with it's miles and miles of rushing waters, waterfalls and even a beautiful cave sourcing yet another waterfall out it's mouth high above Kings River! We even had cell coverage at the waterfall we hiked to. She got a call from her Mom in the Philippines, so we went to video chat and showed her where we were standing - at the base of the falls.Just a wonderful all-around experience to reignite our passion for the outdoors. We are now going to just "chuck it all", buy a motorhome and do the Rockies and West for a couple of years. We will be back to Sunset - it's a great central base for the area.
