A very typical NP campground, some sites are great, some are close together, so it depends on the luck of the draw. Site 108 is huge, however, it does have a very steep walk down from the car/parking area to the tent/bear box/table so it would not be ideal for people with mobility issues or who can't carry all their stuff a fair distance (it's a walk-in site).

We stayed 2 nights in Sunset campground in July. The location is obviously great--close to the Grant Grove of sequoias as well as the Grant Grove market, John Muir lodge and King's Canyon visitor center. Our campsite was at the back end of the campground and backed up to open space which was nice.On the other hand, there were a few problems that made our stay less than ideal. The first was bugs. Lots of flies and mosquitoes. Especially the flies. Constantly in our faces. Buzzing around our ears. Constantly. My best guess is all the food waste in dumpsters scattered around the campground are fly factories. Not sure what can be done about that but the flies made our stay much less enjoyable. The second was trash. Our site had a lot of little bits of plastic from chip bags and the plastic that the little straws on juice boxes are wrapped in. And little bits of paper. All over the campsite. I spent at least 45 minutes picking up little bits of trash from previous campers--not my first choice of activities when camping in a national park. The third was the group in a campsite about 3 sites over from us on our second night. Probably at least 150 feet away. They were up until 1:30 talking loudly, laughing and playing music. We could easily hear what they were saying, and their frequent outbursts of yelling and laughing woke us up a number of times. Quiet hours in a campground are only as good as the enforcement, and in this campground, there was none. Overall, the campground is nice, but the above issues definitely made our stay less enjoyable and made us not want to spend any time at our campsite except when necessary to prepare food and to sleep.

This would have been a 5 star rating but Sunset Campground did NOT have a campground on-site manager. We had a neighbor whose aggressive dogs ran without leashes and one attacked my leashed and tied dog. We had to report it to the Park Rangers, who professionally dealt with it. It is irresponsible for a large national park campground to not have an on-site manager to deal with these situations and many other type of situations. We even had another neighbor who had a fire going at night, despite a total ban on fires by the park due to extreme fire danger status we are in.
