I love staying at Jump-up Cabin and hiking the nearby canyons. It's a perfect place to enjoy a weekend of solitude or to begin a backpacking trip. Although there is a separate room with bunk beds (2), in the cooler autumn months, I have taken a cot and placed it near the woodstove to warm the cabin at night. On this last trip in early October, I was happy to see that the outdoor trash receptacle, meant for ashes but often filled with garbage, was gone. Either thoughtful guests or the caretaker had left firewood and water. The outdoor "restroom with a view" was clean and odorless, and the cabin was tidy . There were a few mouse visitors but they vanished before dawn. Thank you to the Forest Service for maintaining the cabin and making it available for guests. We have been visiting this peaceful retreat for 15 years, since before the cabin became a rental. Be sure to take your own firewood and water (there is an outdoor firepit but be aware of local fire restrictions). The upper spring is available but it is a half-mile hike uphill to bring water back (and you need to purify it). Additionally, stay mindful of the weather and road conditions, as the roads may become impassable with rain or snow.

Pease pack out your own garbage from your stay. The can outside was full of all kinds of trash-possibly from day users, but most looked to be from folks staying at the cabin. The USFS is pretty clear on this, with signage at the cabin and info. when you book the cabin.

Unfortunately, I couldnt locate the cabin after driving for miles and mikes and hours upon hours. The treacherous, rocky, long and extremely dusty road impacted my arrival. Luckily, after much praying I ended up at Big Springs Cabins and the administrator there, was very kind to let me stay at the cozy, comfortable and cute little cabins at this location. I spent a restful night there and left the next morning to my final New Mexico destination. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my stay at this beautiful forest.
