The camp was clean and litter free. The bathrooms were cleaned every day and stocked with paper and soap. The camp host paid a visit and lent us his WIFI password. The visitor center was clean, lively and stocked with merchandise. Maybe a water/soda machine would be cool?

We had a large group that use all three group sites in this area. What a great location! Lots of space to spread out, picnic tables and shade structures were in great shape, and there were plenty of fire rings to choose from. The bathrooms were kept clean and stocked with toilet paper by the ranger staff. There is also lots of parking for these sites. It was really nice that the group sites were separated by some distance from the other camping/RV sites. The location gave us access to some great hiking and the south side of the park was a bit warmer than the north side since the elevation at this site is only about 3000' ASL. The only suggestion I would have for this location would be to add a light in the restroom or maybe even one of those solar tube lights through the ceiling. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back.

Best spot for stargazing. Coyotes got a little close, spooked us for a second but everything was fine

The site has some great fire-rings, picnic tables, and shade coverings over the picnic tables. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked. We certainly hope to return for another trip here. The only negative was that some of the previous campers had let some of their trash blow around. Hopefully we left the site better than we found it.

The last few times we've been at the Cottonwood group camp sites, unauthorized groups have come in to the adjacent sites at night -- after the visitor center has closed, of course -- playing loud music, partying and generally being obnoxious. Last time several of us went to the next site and asked them to tone it down, which they did. This last time, a family decided to picnic in OUR campsite, and started a fire by repeatedly dousing wood with lighter fluid in order to get it started. We had to take it upon ourselves to tell them that a) it was a private campground and b) the way they were lighting their fire was dangerous (it was causing great sparks to fly very near our tents). We never saw a ranger the entire time we were there, and after the visitor center was closed for the day, there was no way to contact park officials about the miscreants. Furthermore, because the restrooms at the visitor center were out of order, everyone was directed to use the restrooms at the group sites, and the women's restroom in particular became nasty, messy and very dirty, and one of the toilets was not working. All this was reported to the visitor center on Sunday afternoon, but no one showed up to service the restroom until Monday morning. So overall, the campsite itself was fine, but the experience was far less than desired. I very much doubt that we will return to Joshua Tree. One more thing: someone has planted native vegetation throughout group sites 1, 2 and 3, surrounded them with chicken wire, and secured the chicken wire with pieces of iron rebar. The rebar sticks up about 2-3 feet, and is extremely dangerous as someone could easily trip over the chicken wire in the dark and impale themselves on the rebar. This is a serious safety issue and needs to be addressed.
