Located at the western edge of JTNP near Yucca Valley, Black Rock campground is close to both civilization and the park. If you need groceries or something from WallMart, they're literally less than 10 minutes away. Because of its proximity to town, there is decent cellular coverage, unlike the campgrounds located deep within the park. There is no water at the campground, so bring plenty (or you'll have to make the 10-minute run to Stater Bros grocery store). I found the campground clean and well-organized, but some of the campsites uncomfortably close together. The park rangers and staff were friendly, with lots of useful information close at hand. The campground has good views and great stargazing.

The campground is not inside the park. So you wont see the cool rocks. You will have to pay an entrance fee to enter the park. The ground is uneven and bathrooms were kinda far from our campsite. The bathrooms were very clean though. Campground is conveniently close to town so that was nice.

The campground is in a convenient location to Yucca Valley, CA. The person in the gift store was quite grumpy with us on two different occasions. Not sure what was up with that. On the second day we were there we found a campsite that we liked and booked it for that night at Recreation.gov. We put our name on two different poles at the campsite. When we got back from exploring later that day someone else had taken our spot. Not sure what was up with that. There were many other sites available for them to take. The roads in the campground could use some TLC. However, even with the above issues it was an overall nice place to stay.

The bathrooms at Black Rock Campground were in excellent condition and very clean. We bought local firewood in Yucca Valley Home Depot, less than 10 minutes driving from the campsite. The hikings around the campground were enjoyable, from easy to moderate. We had plenty of sunscreen and water, and we stayed on trail, so we didn't have any problem. We saw a tarantula hawk, a lot of birds (crows, quails, jays), and a red racer snake. It was a wonderful experience :)

This campground was very clean and organized. I did all the transactions online. There was water, flush toilets, fire pits, and picnic tables. Great location for a car/vehicle/tent camp.

I loved the two days that I camped here. While the campsites are somewhat close because the roads between them are narrow, they make up for it by being nice sized spaces. The bathrooms were really clean which I appreciated. The trailhead was within the campground (we hiked the Panorama Loop Trail) and the hike was really nice with a killer view at the top. It is a pretty popular campground so be prepared to share it with families, etc. but overall it was quiet and beautiful. Check for wind conditions, it was really windy one night!
