This was my 5th time to Joshua Tree and my 2nd time staying at Black Rock. Love this camp ground, friendly staff - clean restrooms with flush toilets and I give it a 5 star rating. Local hiking trails directly from the campground and close to town my sight had great views of the trees, I even had a Joshua tree at my sight.

The roads in the campground are very confusing and there are no directional signs. After circling and not finding our campsite we happened upon the campground host in a golf cart who led us to the site. The road was rutted with gullies and barely passible. We had camped here last year and I expected that things might have improved in one year but they have not. I understand that the NPS is suffering from unfortunate budget cutbacks. However, if there are not adequate funds to maintain this highly desired campground in Joshua Tree National Park, perhaps the campground should be closed until there is enough of a public outcry to demand that the NPS receive adequate funding.

Great spot for hiking, convenience to town, feeling like you're out there, but without being so far out there. Nice little gift shop, flush toilets, sites are tight, but less trafficked than the campgrounds in the park.

Site 97 looked great on the map, we backed up to a trail and had a great view, but the site itself was not flat which made it very difficult for us to find a spot to put up our large tent. We found a spot, only to be told by the park ranger the next morning that we needed to move our tent within 25 feet of the table. Keep that in mind when pitching your tent. They will ask you to move it. The park ranger provided us with a document with a list of the campsites rules including the one that says, tent must be within 25 feet of the table. The road through the campsite was in need of repairs, but the restrooms were clean enough (no showers).

Site 97 was beautiful.

Campground is in need or repair in most areas. Roads are in very rough shape. Bathrooms need upgrading. Staff was not overly friendly. Does not feel like a national park campsite.

Spacious sites, nicely maintained, but the bid rocks like you find them on Ryan Campground are missing

Black Rock campground is in terrible need of funding to fix its road throughout the campground. There are severe washouts and deep ruts that make this road worthy of 4-wheeling. It was difficult to tow our 30-foot trailer on it. Very difficult to walk to bathroom. Campsite did not accommodate our trailer well. Was extremely unlevel front to back. Difficult to negotiate with large Yucca in center of site.

We really liked the way the campsites are spread out, there are some great views from most of the sites. The only concern is the road in the campground, it has many ruts and potholes. We have a 25 foot trailer with high ground clearance, so we were OK, but it would be difficult for larger trailers or ones with low ground clearance. The other drawback is that it is about a 30 minute drive to get into the main part of the park. Overall, we would love to stay here again in the future.

Great camping, quiet and nice view on the Yucca valley. Basic facilities

Campsite we had was absolutely perfect for stargazing and views of the park!

Looks like a third world campground. Asphalt is almost non existent and roads are washed out and pit holed. Worst campground ever! No signage upon entry to direct you toward numbered sites. Water is way far off from the fringes. The actual sites have not been leveled and are tough to level campers. Bathrooms were maintained, however, the same camp trash was in the mens for 3 days and never emptied.

It’s a shame that the park is in such a poor state. The roads are very bad and the sites are not level and where we parked our RV was not correct but the correct area was not marked. Even the park rangers are frustrated by lack of funding for repairs.

The ground on site 97 is rocky. Couldn't skate a single nail down. Try to avoid that.
Otherwise the camp ground is nice and the hiking trial is kids friendly.

beautiful secluded campground just minutes away from the grocery stores and gas stations!
@DanielP725 · Camped on Mar 3, 2021 at Campsite #97
Good campground with nice scenery. Proximity to the park is great. It's not in the main part of the park but a short drive and has good hikes from the campground. Flush toilets are a plus.

Camp grounds are mixed. Some are quite large for national parks. Some are small. Many are not level so tent placement is critical. I didn't see any that would accommodate large groups. Most seem like 2 tents would fit, more would get challenging.

Good dark skies with some minor light pollution from town.

We always enjoy coming to Black rock Canyon. It is a wonderful campsite and the staff were very helpful. We hadn't been for five years and it certainly looks like the roads had deteriorated significantly in the campground. It didn't distract from the overall experience but seems indicative of the general degeneration of federal infrastructure.

Access to trails, amazing views down the valley, wonderful facilities, the sound of several kit foxes (I am assuming they weren’t coyotes) howling and yipping, and great people.

I would stay here again.
