The Joshua Tree is as lovely as ever, but this campground facility is an embarrassment to the National Park System. I know the maintenance backlog at the NP's is a national problem, but I've never seen it demonstrated quite so explicitly. The campground infrastructure is crumbling. Literally. What were once presumably chip-sealed campground roads are now more pothole than surface in many (most) places- drive it in a low-clearance vehicle at your car's peril. Where the roads are either entirely free of old pavement or where they have magically retained it, they are easy enough to negotiate, but they are almost all literally one big rain event away from becoming impassable. There are also enormous erosion scars running through many non-road portions of the campground, both hazardous to people of limited mobility and an ecological disaster in the making if they're ignored for much longer. The bathrooms appeared to be functional, but I didn't investigate them closely so this is all I will say: the maintenance backlog at this campground definitely extends to the bathrooms. I was not grossed out by them, but just for context, I am a sleep-on-the-ground kind of camper and it takes a great deal to gross me out.Mostly I'm just disappointed in this country's lack of support for what should be one of its most cherished accomplishments. We should all be embarrassed to host anyone- especially visitors from other nations- at a facility in this state of disrepair.

When I went to the campground headquarters I was met by a ranger that gave me a personal, in-depth outline of the campground and surrounding area. I had never encountered a more happy and helpful guide. And the campground was nice too

I stayed at camp 83 for my birthday after a nice day at JTNP. The ground was quiet and I had a nice view from camp. It was a little windy at night but it wasnt terrible. The bathrooms here were the best and cleanest Ive ever seen in my years of camping. I would definitely stay here again.

The campground seems to be undergoing some updates around the sites. Site 83 had a lot of space for a tent and car. It was at the top of the hill, which was nice and quiet. There are no showers, but the bathrooms were all nice and clean. The water spigots were easily accessible, and the water tasted pretty good. Will definitely be back!

Super easy to find and pretty nice spot. Only complaints are the spots are bit close together and it is far from the interior of the park, but that's just how it is. Definitely would stay there again!

Went there in 2nd January! Campsites are not super easy to find and we drove around looking for our lot for about 30 minutes. But once we did, it was lovely. Toilet is clean and well maintained. It was super cold in winter so make sure your tents and sleeping gear is sufficient to keep you worm. We made the mistake of keeping our water outside and it froze in the morning!

I loved the water and flushing toilets. My only complaint is that the ground was so hard that I couldn’t secure my tent with my pegs and it was so windy I had to put rocks inside my tent so it wouldn’t fly away.

Beautiful campground that was conveniently located near hiking trails and nature. Bathrooms were very clean and the campsite was beautiful!

4.5 stars for view.
4 stars for location (a bit out of the main part of Joshua Tree).
3.5 stars for actual site; it was large and had a nice picnic table and a fire ring with a grill top. It was also uneven, torn-up a bit and rocky.
1 star for the general state of the campground. Road sucked, no signs, bathrooms were clean but no place to wash pots/pans, showers on other side of the campground (we didn't bother to use), just generally an embarrassing state for a campground in a well-used National Park. Let me be clear, we as a nation should be EMBARESSED at the state of most of the NP campgrounds I've seen and this one in particular!!

Loved Black Rock campground. We stayed on a Thursday night in March and it was quiet and clean with flat campsites. Not too crowded although the campsites are close together. Facilities were clean and close by. The only drawback to this campground is that there are mountains to the east and west, so if you are looking for fantastic sunrises and sunsets, you may want to find a different site. The night sky is fabulous, but likely viewable from anywhere in the park. We saw one coyote strolling nearby, lots of birds and a few small critters.

Clean and quiet.
Little far from the park entrance.
