I didn't realize how close to LA and that area this was. Lots of hiking, very dark, and very quiet. The generator rules are well defined and enforced by the hosts. Lots to see from the campground and lots of wildlife. Yucca Valley (town) is close enough for dinner and shopping and small enough that the light does not affect the stargazing.

The campground is in an ideal location with several hiking trails accessible within the campground.

It was very difficult to find a level spot to park our van in the site (#58); it appeared that most of the other sites had the same issue, no level places for RVs or tents. We were told we couldn't change sites without going through recreation.gov even though there were lots of empty sites. The toilets were in poor condition with some of the sinks and door locks not working. The roads are in very poor condition, full of potholes. Also the staff we dealt with was surly. The scenery and Joshua Trees were beautiful.

The hiking at Black Rock is very good but the campground is really past it due date. By about a decade. The washroom was closed, the trailer dump was closed. The roads in the campground were terrible. Really really terrible. The campsites are worn down to the point where there is no vegetation between sites. They will never recover.

This campground is in serious need of an upgrade. My site for three days was not at all level and was full of ruts. After 20 minutes of trying to get reasonably level i gave up and went to an unreserved site for the night. Second night we decided not to stay, and found spots in another campground in the park. The third night i ended up doubling up in a friends site that was more reasonable level. The roads throughout were in very bad shape, ruted and broken. Will not return until the campground receives an extensive upgrade.

Pro:Not many artificial lights around the campground overall, making night sky that much more observable.Nice view, we are blessed to have a view to beautiful morning sun rise.Having cell signal is a nice touch, making coordinating with friends, and planning for excursions to the park much more feasible. The water spigots do provide access to clean tap water, water comes out of 2 spouts at same time, I happened to have a bucket, so I got to fill a lot of water quickly without having to fidget around the faucet like other campgrounds. Con:Asphalt is severely eroded between columns of site groups, making finding sites within the campground difficult especially after sunset. There are repairs happening on the facilities of the camp (nature center [well, you can still get stamps from rangers on duty], one of the two bathroom buildings is down) but it also limits the extend of access to the campground amenities.

Black Rock Campground was a great place to stay at Joshua Tree. The campsites are all nicely spaced, you don't ever feel on top of other campers. The views from the campsite are beautiful, you can see lots of stars on a clear night. The bathrooms were always clean, too. Finally, there's great hikes that you can start from the campground!

The campground is very well maintained. many if not all the campsites are on the hill so make sure you try to find the flattest spot for you tent.

I really liked our campsite, it had a nice view overlooking the canyon. We camped in early April and had perfect weather, low 80s during the day and low 50s at night. Our campsite had lots of room, we parked two cars, pitched a 6 person tent, set up a sun shelter over the picnic table and had a place to set out our chairs to take in the scenery. Bonus points for not having to go through the entrance of JNP to get to the campground as there is pretty much always a lineup to get into the park, and for water being available at this campsite. The campsite is very close to Yucca Valley although it requires a car to get into town. It's a big campsite but everyone was very good about quieting down at night time. I would absolutely without question camp here again.

Black Rock Campground is conveniently located, has multiple restrooms within short distance of the campsites, is clean and has beautiful views at night of the stars and the lights of the nearby town below. Great sunsets too!
