First, Annie got a small thorn stuck in her head while playing near Joshua Tree, and had to come to her house to remove it. So my kid's nickname became 'the one who wears the Joshua tree in his hair'.
In late March, it was very windy many days; bring appropriate gear (warm hat, neck warmth , mittens or gloves, layers & a windbreaker) to be warm in the morning. The greatest challenge is keeping a camp stove flame lit & protected from the wind. If you bring a backpacking stove, like me, fashion at home your own very tall windbreak. I had to hunker down behind a fire ring to improve my windbreak. Coleman stoves with fold-up lids seemed to be more successful.
In March & April, desert temps drop quickly when the sun goes down. Bring layers, including hats, gloves or mittens, and a neck gaiter or scarf.
Birders: watch for a flock of Pinyon Jays to fly over. Cactus Wrens & Western Scrub Jays are frequent visitors. Ask the ranger staff for more recommendations.
