Black Rock is, as described also by others, a weird campground. Officially it's part of the National Park and it's in the parks boundaries, but it's entry lies quite hidden away from the west park entrance. The campground itself is a collection of uneven terraces that lies uphill with little vegitation other than some Joshua & Yuca trees. The visitor center was closed by time of visiting. The place feels - other than many other campers - deserted and left behind. Site 82 is an uneven, large site with a broken fire ring, and lies very exposed on top of a little hill. The roads, particularly on the south part of the campgrounds (around this site), are quite rough. The only real advantage is that it's close to the restrooms, and it has a decent view of Yuca Valley at night.

Everything we expected. Some reviews claim the road is really bad to the camping spot. Its not good but you can access is easily.

Park was fun and awesome views. unfortunately many of the roads were not maintained, asphalt broken and many hole to watch out for. and it was very windy. although spaces were listed as paved ours was not. It was dirt and not very level. I understand budgets have been cut. We still enjoyed ourselves and loved the views and location.

Great campsite with trails close by. Spot was spacious.

This campground is not in the heart of the park, but rather on the edge of a suburban neighborhood. You'll need to drive back through town about 15+ miles to get into the park. Sites are fine but generally undesirable. Overall campground is deserving of a major overhaul and upgrade to loop roads and sites.

I love this high desert campground. There are numerous campsites surrounded by joshua trees, yucca, creosote, etc., as well as associated wildlife. The bathrooms are reasonably clean. It has a lively nature center and numerous hiking trails. It's one of my favorite campgrounds.

The employee of visitor center is great. The road in the campground is horrible.

We were towing a travel trailer so maybe a different experience than others. The roads were atrocious, very torn up and washed away!!! They didnt give us a campground map at checkin and the roads were so bad that we had a hard time finding our site. They also didnt give us the campground rules so we had to figure it all out on our own.. It was very windy at the time we were there (obviously not a dig of black rock) the wind made out stay a bit miserable rangers were very friendly and informative, which was a good thing since the girl in the nature center at check in was very UNinformative!!!

This is a nice campground with access to many trails and bathrooms with plumbing. Seems like a great place to bring the family!

Clean bathrooms. Good Verizon service. Roads are rough but site 98 was fairly isolated from other campers with great views. Easy access to a bathroom.

The campground rock formations are spectacular. There were some climbers next to us, and we got to see them ascend the nearby rock face.

I love Joshua Tree, and Site #98 promised to have great views of the hills and draws. But unfortunately, there are no really flat spots to put a tent on this site, unless you occupy the upper parking area, which is apparently too far from the picnic table and off limits. The ground is rutted and hard as a rock from heavy vehicles driving on it while muddy. No shade. Still a beautiful campground, but avoid this campsite unless you have a small RV.

This is the best camping in Jushua Tree, very clean, good views, remote and good service from the local Park Rangers.

This campground has severely deteriorated roads throughout the entire camp - making it very difficult - dangerous to navigate even the smallest camper van without damaging the unit. Needs immediate road repair!!!

Beautiful panoramic views but roads are not so good

The Park Rangers were friendly and extremely helpful. The campsite offered plenty of room for our two tents. By mid-morning we shifted over to the day parking lot where a large Joshua Tree provided shade so we could continue to enjoy the scenery before departing.

This could not have been a better spot. I had reserved one nt but we really wanted to be at White Tank (alas, we got there too late at 9am and nothing was available). Black Tank could not have been better for our two nights! Our #97 had the best views (sits higher), the bathrooms actually have running water, and the hiking right there was fantastic. We went into the park x2s and cooked in the evenings, enjoying glorious night skies and lovely sunrises. The ranger station was so helpful, even giving us the tip that a second nt was going to open up across the way, truly can’t say enough good things about this campground and will return.

Your camp host Will and his wife were extremely friendly and helpful. Will happened to be driving by when we were arriving and stopped to help us back our trailer into the sight. At that point we realized that it was going to be difficult on departure because of the position that we shifted the trailer. Will said he would come by 3 days later on our departure. He and his wife showed up as promised and helped us pull the trailer into position. The camp is very lucky to have such great volunteers.

the roadways are in terrible condition but the campgroud is pretty. like an oasis of joshua trees. some spots are fairly private. we ended up moving from 98 to 99. I worked with the office to move but the ranger still left me a payment envelope for 99 although I had been instructed by the office to write on an envelope that I had paid for 98. Feels like poor communication between staffers. When I let the office know I was left with a payment envelope, the attendant said, “no big deal, you're fine.” Hopefully I wont get a nastygramm at home now.
