Black Rock revealed an entirely new side of Joshua Tree NP and I LOVE IT!! Can't wait to go back. I've been camping, hiking, and star gazing at JT for decades but this was my first trip to Black Rock. I couldn't believe how different it is - pine trees, small canyons, tons of different rock types, and great trails. Not the best for star gazing (more light pollution than anywhere I've been in the park) but I'll be going back to explore all the trails!

Loved how rustic this campground felt, even though it did make it a little tricky to get our RV on level ground. We saw lots of great birds right near camp roadrunners, California scrub jays, and more. It is a bit of a drive to get to the actual park entrance, but it was an easy trek and we didnt mind. It actually gave us some opportunity to explore the town of Joshua Tree, which we might have skipped otherwise. We visited in the days leading up to Christmas and while it was busy, it felt quite friendly and respectful. All that said, Id be interested in staying at one of the campgrounds inside the park next time for the sunsets and stargazing. Id imagine those would be incredible.

Great campground. Large sites and lots of room between sites. Fabulous views of the desert and great hikes from the campground. Not too far from town or the park entrance. Highly recommend

The camp experience was great once we got our 20 ft. trailer past the non-existent signage, terrible potholes and rutted road leading to our camp site. Very surprising for a National Park. The visitors center informed us that they request money every year to repair the roads but are denied funding. The remainder of the park is stunning.

The campground needs maintenance and upgrades. The sites were clean, but the roads were washed out and dilapidated. The campground is 35 minutes from the heart of Joshua Tree and its beauty.

Pros: It was quiet and beautiful with trail access from the campsites.- Service - Sunrise Cons:-The road around the campsite was rough. We were able to navigate it in our Sprinter but there were certain areas that we avoided due to large dips. - Trails were not easy to navigate. We definitely got off trail even using GAIA GPS. There were areas that looked like trails but werent. When we reached the summit other hikes also commented on their struggles finding the trails.- Closer to town (can also be a pro) it it does infringe on star viewing. - Two employees at the nature center werent helpful at all when I can asking for help in regard to an injury. They didnt seem to have access to a first aid kit.

Black Rock Campground is right at the trailhead for some great hiking. Staff was helpful and friendly, and we appreciated the great communication regarding reservations, safety, and possible flooding. We stayed just before Christmas and the campground was quite empty. There was a small problem in that one of the sites was full of noisy people, making noise after quiet hours and running a generator after hours. We were in a trailer, so we could shut the door. But the tent campers might have been annoyed.

Enjoyed my stay, would stay again. Positives are that you are close to Yucca Valley and the conveniences of a small city. You have decent cell service. The main issues I had with the campground revolve around its infrastructure. The campground entrance has an area for non-campers to park and hit the trails. That's great, but the parking set up gets crowded and some cars park in a dirt island in between the lanes entering and exiting the campground and some of those cars are too and hang out over the road. So I always worried about coming in and leaving the campground towing my trailer and if it would fit in between the parked cars. Inside the campground the roads are uneven and rocky- compared to the nice paved roads in the rest of the National Park I was surprised at how bad the roads at the campground were. Dump station charges you $5, there is poor signage if there is any at all on how to access the dump station. The first time I accidently drove past it and had to exit and re-enter the campground. Next issue was how this campground is located inside the park but you can't drive to the main attractions without exiting the park and then waiting in a line of cars to re-enter. Our campsite was designated as one that a trailer could park but the ground wasn't level and we had to get creative with setting up camp. We went when there were a lot of school field trips. Each day there was at least one bus of kids who would take a ranger guided nature walk on a nearby trail- not a big deal but given our closest bathroom was closed for renovations it made the other bathrooms more crowded, especially with the students there.

great campground, all very good, clean toilets, the only thing but is not a problem from the campground managment directly is that was a group of people camping in other spot that didn't respect the quiet hours and was screaming drunk and making a lot of noise till very late and doesn't allow to the people to rest and sleep, and is no one controlling that on night time. other than that all good.

We had a beautiful stay at Black Rock and a nice hike on the Panorama loop, plus had easy access to the main Joshua Tree park. The only thing that would make the stay better would be better signage for the campsite loops. We had to go to the office twice to try to find our site. Quiet campground and clean bathrooms.

The park location is lovely with great views and hikes around, but as mentioned in other reviews, they must fix the roads within the park. Its appalling how bad the potholes are.

This campground is definitely NOT where one would expect. Driving though residential neighborhoods to arrive at the gate. The timeline of my visit was very shortly after the torrential rains and snow that hit California week after week. The road throughout the campground was very badly washed out and a very slow drive. The directional signage was non-existent so finding your campsite is a challenge. I arrived just before dusk and wind was howling>. So I quick dragged things out, grabbed some soup and escaped into the camper. I was a chilly strart the next morning. The wind had come down and so had the temperature. I loaded it all back in and headed out. The view from my camper window was breath taking. The west side of the park is where the large Joshua Trees are and spectacular views. Its close to town with some cute shops. I cant speak to the facilities at the campground as I never used any of them. I would definitely return. Theres lots to experience at Joshua Tree National Park and Black Rock Canyon Campground.

We loved it here. The campground was rustic, just like we wanted. The view is amazing and yes, the roads could use some work but they're fine for what this campground is. And the proximity to Joshua Tree west entrance is easy. Not quite next door but not far at all. We will definitely be coming back.

Having a gift shop, ranger station and visitor center all in the center of the campground was very convenient. The rangers were very helpful and kind and it made planning adventures much easier than having to drive somewhere first before beginning. The campground itself was fine. The sites were decent to generously sized and true to the descriptions on recreation.gov. The roads though the campground are quite rutted and rough and require extreme care and reduced speed to navigate. Good hiking trail heads at the edges of the campground and it is a short easy drive into the town of Yucca Valley.
