Very nice location close to town with great views. It is about a 30 minute drive to the heart of Joshua tree NP but a nice drive. Signage in the park could be updated as it is not clear how to drive directly to the correct loop.

The roads within the campground are nearly impassable. The sites are nowhere near level. The bathrooms are disgusting. Would not stay here again.

The campground was peaceful with beautiful desert scenery. The picnic table, firepit, and grill were very handy. The bathroom was clean and well maintained. The host was helpful and friendly. We would definitely camp here again. The space was big enough for our 18 foot camper van but I would bring leveling blocks if you want your camper to be perfectly level.

Campground is nice but it was odd that even though every site showed it was sold out online, there were many spots empty.We were camping for 2 nights with a small RPOD trailer being pulled by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We also had a Jeep Wrangler to use on dirt and 4wd roads. All fit on the assigned lot driveway of space 61 and 46.Volunteer host Jim came rushing over 5 mins after we arrived and told us we had to move our Jeep immediately to a lot a distance away because no more than 2 licensed vehicles were allowed per site. We later found out we could have parked in the visitor center parking lot until dark.We thought the rules are for no more than 2 motorized vehicles per site. The next day we checked with an officer who advised we were right and would advise the Host. Well, the Host Jim pounded on our trailer door the next day and said he would call the police and have us thrown out even though we advised we had spoken with an officer that morning. Not really sure what the rules are as spoke with a Park Ranger over the situation in the visitor center that morning. He initially said the Officer was wrong but when we gave him details of our setup, he was surprised. We are in our 70s, travel to many National parks and National forest campgrounds and have never been treated like this before.

Major Issues
@ThomasW1659833 · Camped on Mar 6, 2024 at Campsite #46
Black Rock Canyon is in need of a complete rehabilitation. Its internal roads have disintegrated. Its camping pads are in need of complete re-sculpting into something useful. It has no internal signage showing how to reach your campsite. It is a wreck, and the NPS is negligent in its approach to bringing it back up to a decent standard. I asked a ranger about it, and he said it would be as long as six years before the campground would be restored. It should be closed until it is useable. That said, it is close to some really nice trails on the west side of the park. Fortunately, these trails are accessible from day-use parking nearby.

The roads within the campground are in disrepair. Pot holes, bumps etc. not good for RVs. We would not stay there again.

We enjoyed our stay, lots of wildlife around and the flora was amazing. Only complaint was the restroom lights were on during the day but not at night, why?? The road in the campground was very beat up.

The campground roads are a washed out mess. The NPS needs to invest in this campground infrastructure.

The large pull in sites were great. I did appreciate seeing that the major pot holes were in process of being filled while I was there. The building that has registration was well maintained and the souvenir shop was very good. One woman at the counter was a bit off putting, and not just one time. She was not friendly at all on any of the days we were there (sorry, I dont know her name). Other workers were very good. Overall we had a great time and will return, but would look at the lower camp/RV sites that are a bit more protected from wind.

There are several good hikes right from the campground. The staff at the center there are very helpful. Campsites are roomy. Bathrooms decent but ran out of toilet paper. Beautiful views from the campsites.

The campground is well located, near Joshua Tree National Park and the Town of Joshua Tree, amid lots of hiking trails. The facilities are well kept and clean. Campsites are typically spaced with good views due to the terraced design of the campground. This past year's weather has degraded the roads, but makes for an excellent speed bump solution.The one thing that should be noted in the campground description is that the dump station costs extra to use.

Take a picture of the map before you arrive, there could definitely be more signage. We were in a camper van and didn't have a picture of the map and it was a little difficult to find out site. Campground clean, bathrooms clean.

A nice quiet campground on the West end of Joshua Tree Park. Close to the town of Yucca but you wouldn't know it while you're staying at the campground. Roads in the campground are a bit rough, so drive slowly.

Wonderful campground. Quiet with spacious camping spots. Roads inside the campground need repair though. Lots of potholes but other than that it was very nice.

We have traveled to National Parks all over the country. While the staff and Joshua Tree NP itself was great, this campground was not. The infrastructure at the Black Rock Canyon campground was frankly an embarrassment to the National Park Service. The very narrow roads through the campground were basically a series of potholes and erosion ruts. It was difficult to drive our modest 34 foot motor home in the campground, and we are very experienced RV campers. The campsites themselves suffered from erosion ruts, potholes and were not what we expected and not a true representation of what we saw on the recreation.gov website. Due to the narrow and pathetic roads, it was also difficult to get into and out of the campsites with any kind of RV bigger than a van. This campground is very close to, and actually borders, the community and city of Yucca Valley, CA. We would think that the National Park Service would try to showcase a campground with as high of profile as this one. Especially considering this campground is in a National Park that is relatively close to Los Angeles and San Diego. This campground needs a major update.

If you dont want to make the trek all the way to the main park. This is a wonderful choice. The hikes from this location are all moderate+. There is a dump station and Joshua Tree all around. Clean bathrooms, water spigots, and water to fill the trailer if you have a hose. A huge issue for us was getting our trailer stuck (subsequently damaging our truck) because of the lack of/poor signage.
