Site #2 is badly overgrown. You will get scratches on your vehicle. The tent sites are not even close to level; you will be sliding down a hill. The picnic table has a seriously warped top making half of if it unusable.

This campsite is beautiful on its own, though the access to Kearsarge Lakes was our biggest motivator for the reservation. 10/10 would recommend this camping location on its own! There is a waterfall view, a creek that runs through the campground, beautiful trees and peaks around you, reasonably priced firewood available, and clean vault toilets. This spot is a great place to spend time in the Eastern Sierras!

Stayed the 2nd to last weekend of the season and it was beautiful, windy, really cold and it snowed!! Can’t wait to go back!

Quiet little campground in lovely setting. Sites are very tight so pay attention to vehicle sizes!

We love Onion Valley Campground. It snowed the week before our reservation, but we received an email from recreation.gov the day before, telling us that the campgrounds were open. When we arrived, there were no cars in the parking lot and there was a foot of snow on the ground. There was no firewood available for purchase, this at a time when the temperatures at night were predicted to be 20 degrees F. We had to drive all the way back down to Independence to buy some. However, we were unable to tolerate the cold while sleeping in our tent, so after that first night, we rented a motel room in Independence for the remaining 2 nights of our stay. It would have been good to know in advance how much snow was up there and that there would be no firewood available upon arrival. We ended up doing our hikes in the Whitney Portal area which is at a lower altitude. We enjoyed the hiking and the motel, but we did not so much enjoy the campground this time.

My experience was probably worse than others. Site 2 is very small with overgrown brush on all sides making it difficult to pull the car in and out. Room for one small tent. Don’t recommend site 2. Otherwise it’s a beautiful campground and of course a beautiful location.

Onion Valley is a beautifully rustic campground and sites are in high demand. You will need reservations well in advance. The campsites are very quiet and very private - each is surrounded by trees and brush, so you cannot see your neighbors and can barely hear them, which is awesome. Be aware that the campground is dry - no water - bring your own. There is also a small creek very close to the campground and if you bring water treatment (iodine, UV sterilizer pen, etc.) you can resupply water there. There is also no cell service (at least for AT&T), which I expected and welcomed. There was just a faint and very directional signal at Kearsarge Pass so I was able to text my family from there! Most people are here for hiking - particularly the Kearsarge Pass trail, which I've hiked (and it is totally awesome) - it is very helpful to acclimate at 9200 ft before heading up the trail for either a dayhike or overnight backpack. This is not a place for late night parties or loud noise - if you want that in your campground experience, you have lots of other places.

The previous visitors at our site did not leave up until 2 PM when we needed to check in. Stayed at Site 2. Very secluded and walled in by trees, but no shade in the early day. Pretty quiet. Very busy with backpackers on the PCT. If they ask you for a ride or something and say they'll pay you, don't do it! Trust me.
