Campsites were nicely spread out and the staff was very friendly. Bathrooms were clean but showers may be due for a refresh. The only issue was the mosquitos which is really out of anyone's hands this time of year (end of July/early August). Bring bug spray or be ready to make some fires/smoke to help keep them at bay.

Even with the monsoon rain, I had an excellent time tent camping at INDU. My site (#24 Mather Loop) was non-electric and got a lot of water. But when the rain cleared out, I sat quietly by the fire and enjoyed the serenity of the park. I saw deer, a turkey and squirrels. Canadian geese flew overhead, as well as cranes with their distinctive sounds. A Great Horned Owl sat above my tent and a few days later, a screech owl. Sites offer privacy and seclusion in a wooded area. Recycling is available. The bathhouse is well lit, offers hot showers, clean, flushable toilets and electrical outlets for a hairdryer. Access is paved, free of encroaching plants and offers a camp sink to do dishes. The road is paved and camp-hosts are friendly and helpful. The park is safe and I never had any concerns. West Beach has an excellent trail from which you can view the Chicago skyline. Plenty of other trails, as well as several beaches with an opportunity to view beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets. You can hike, bike and swim. Must sees: the Visitor Center, of course with knowledgeable staff (great info source), Chellberg Farm, Bailly Homestead, Mt. Baldy, Paul H. Douglas Center and Century of Progress Homes. Stop by the volunteer office and do a few hours of park service for Jim Whitenack. It's a great way to learn more about your park. Indiana Dunes has a phenomenal staff. It's a fantastic park and you'll be glad that you chose to visit this area. Rain or shine, it can't be beat! I love Indiana Dunes and I recommend Dunewood Campground for your next visit!

Great state park to camp at. Being close to Beverly Beach was nice as we could ride our bikes to see the sites.

I love Indiana Dunes National Park. I stayed on site #24 in Mather Looop at Dunewood Campground. The sites are woodsy and offer privacy; not attached to one another like in the state park. The site is well maintained by staff with a clean firepit. The restrooms, showers and camp sink was cleaned daily by dedicated park staff. Showers were nice and hot. Site #24 is across from trash dumpster and recycling and a short walk to the showers. If it rains heavily, be prepared to deal with some mud and standing weather. The park cannot be held accountable for dismal weather. lol I caught glimpses of deer, turkeys, and various wildlife while sitting at my site. There was a variety of birds, including a large Barn Owl that made his presence known at night. Gas, groceries and firewood can be purchased nearby. Visit Chellberg Farm, Mount Baldy and nearby beaches. Check out the Century of Progress Homes along the beach in Beverly Shores, West Beach and the Visitor Center too. Also, don't forget to purchase your NPS Entrance Pass. If you forget anything, Michigan City is a short drive and you can purchase items from larger retailers like Meijer, Wal-Mart, etc... Beverly Shores Train Depot is across from the campground and you can day trip to Chicago. Bring your bike and ride around Beverly shores, which is scenic and offers beach and trail access to save money. The Octave in Chesterton offers gourmet burgers and craft beer. But if you love camping and the outdoors, build you a campfire and enjoy this beautiful campground for what it has to offer. INDU has lots of great hiking trails too. Grab a brochure and a map and discover what this park has to offer. Talk to a ranger or one of the friendly and knowledgeable Dunewood campground hosts. This park is a definite visit destination for nature lovers.

Second time staying here! The train noises are less dramatic in the summer once the trees fill in! Such a great spot for hammocks!

This is a very well-maintained campground. Perfect for beginner tent campers: no electricity but has complete bathroom/shower facilities; campsites are in the woods but location is only a few miles from towns for buying supplies.

Every time we have been to Dunewood we have had a wonderful time. The camp hosts are very welcoming, the sites are well maintained, bathrooms are clean, and overall everything is kept up and taken care of. Its an easy bike ride to the beaches and a quick drive to grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping. (But still feels secluded) Only downfall is you can hear some traffic from a nearby bigger road sometimes. We stay at M 24 every year. Its a big site that is on the end of the loop so it feels farther away from other sites
