Ponderosa State Park, on the banks of Payette Lake, is one of Idaho's premier camping spots. It has two campgrounds, the unimaginatively named RV Campground and Peninsula Campground. The RV campground, the newer of the two, has full hookups, water, electricity and sewer. The campsites are more spread out than in Peninsula and there are centralized covered shelters that are available for campers for day use. The lake is a major draw but there are also numerous hiking and biking trails. The resort town of McCall is only three minutes away. Reservations are allowed nine months in advance and these campgrounds are usually booked for the entire summer. Cancelations do come up and people are sometimes able to grab a spot a few days ahead of time. Deer are plentiful and often wander through the campsites.
