It's a little confusing, however. The City of Rocks National Reserve is operated jointly by the National Park Service and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. The campground is outside the boundaries of the national reserve, but next to it and is technically part of Castle Rocks State Park. A separate City of Rocks campground is inside the reserve, but is mostly for tent campers and those with small or medium-sized RVs or campers.
Smoky Mountain has 38 campsites, including six designated for use by campers with horses. There's a variety of paved back-in and pull-through sites, either 42 feet or 60 feet.
They designed this campground with ample space between campsites, which come with water and electricity hookups. There's also a restroom building with free hot showers.
A dump station is located down the hill near the main road to Almo and the City of Rocks.
There's a lot of vegetation between campsites. The campground was quiet while we were there, with little traffic as there's only one road into the campground and no nearby side streets.
The campground was kept clean and the hosts were friendly. We enjoyed our stay there and plan to return.
