My family has been trying to stay here for years and we finally were able to make it happen. I was a bit nervous after reading reviews and was expecting the cabin to be gross and infested with mice. We went in July 2024 during a particular hot streak and when we arrived at the cabin I was pleased to find the cabin was quite cool. We were traveling with a young child and the cabin remained cool through the entire day and was a perfect place for him to take his naps.The cabin was clean. A bit broken down and old but not gross. We never heard any mice in the walls but if you didnt clean up after yourself there was evidence of critters getting into food etc. which is how it is at any camp ground. There is no power but they provided laterns for light which we also had some of our own. There is a stove and I would say dont rely on the oven to get too hot and bake anything in a hurry but works.Fridge is really nice and there is a freezer. We just used our sleeping bags as bedding so if you are expecting sheets being your own.The bathroom is a bit of a walk but not too bad and is really nice to have a toilet.You need to pack out all your own trash so keep that in mind when thinking logistics but they have best safe containers to store while during your stay.

First time back at Magee in about 10 years. The setting is beautiful with the meadow and all of the songbirds. This place is a birdwatcher's dream rental-Robins, Warblers, Catbirds, Pine Siskins, Flycatchers, Cedar Waxwings, Bald Eagles and more. Unfortunately, the cabin is getting pretty run down. There is no running water in the cabin and the pots, pans, dishes etc...are grungy. Furniture is stained and worn out. There is a hot shower and a flush toilet in one of the nearby buildings which is nice. Given that they charge ~$100 per night and it is booked all season, they ought to be able to invest in some maintenance.

Absolutely beautiful location. It is a cabin in the woods so there are mice. Due to the septic tank issues you have to walk a few yards to the provided bathroom and shower area, hey flushing toilets and hot showers are a bonus up there. Fridge and stove were perfectly operational.

The Magee Ranger Station is suffering from hordes of visitors and over a decade of benign neglect by the USFS. Having been renting MRS since its inaugural season in 2000. Over the years, my friends and I have enjoyed countless hours of gourmet wining & dining, warm camaraderie, terrific fishing, outstanding wildlife viewing and blissful peace & quiet. More recently, our idyllic paradise has been compromised by the proliferation of Razrs/Side-by-Sides and increasing aircraft weekend fly-ins, but that is the cost of doing business in the modern world.
We’ve also sadly watched as the MRS was slowly degraded by a rising water table that rendered the bathroom & kitchen sink unusable, and an optional shower house that has gone steadily downhill to the point where there is perpetual standing water and broken window panes semi-held in place with duct tape.
In short, MRS is being loved to death, and the USFS appears to be unable or unwilling to do the right thing and take the property out of the system for an entire season for the first comprehensive re-fitting and re-habbing in twenty years. My recent phone conversations with the new recreation manager for the District - discussing possible volunteer opportunities - have given me new hope that this beautiful public amenity may yet be rejuvenated before it collapses or burns down. Long live Magee!

It would be 5 stars if the septic system were repaired where the bathroom in the cabin could be used. It worked on our first visit several years ago but hasn't worked since. It is inconvenient to walk 2 bldgs over for the bathroom with little kids not to mention the middle of the night. Please please please take some of the rental money you make off of the cabin and fix it, move the septic to a different location, whatever it takes! Otherwise, a great time to be had at this special place!

Been going to Magee for years and years. Wish they could fix the water issues; shower, toilet etc. etc.

It was filthy and unkept; we found food and pet hair in the couch cushions. Clouds of dust came out of the curtains when we tried to close them, plus one curtain was torn. We were informed ahead of time that the bathroom did not work due to septic issues. Also, the backup bathroom was sketchy for cleanliness and the shower there did not work either. We did appreciate having a refrigerator, which ran on propane; however water was leaking from somewhere in the refrigerator. The glass globes around both gas lanterns were badly cracked. Although 16 forks were listed in the inventory we only found two to use. We were glad additional members of our group could not make it. All this for $150/night! If this was reinvested in the cabin we wouldn't mind the cost. Overall, we were disappointed with this experience as we had stayed here over 20 years ago when it first opened and at that time we were very pleased with our visit.

The water in the warehouse worked fine at first, then the toilets failed to fill on their own and finally, the water failed to work altogether. This with the highest water tables in years. Interestingly enough, the water worked great a few years ago, when it was almost 100 degrees every day, dry, and the fire-spotting aircraft were taking off next door. If work isn't done on the cabin, especially the doors and floors, everyone will lose out on this cabin that has such great potential and a great location. Work and upkeep must be done to preserve this truly historic venue.

Lovely place except for the mice and or rat excrement on all furniture, a lot of activity at nights in the walls as well. We spent hours cleaning sleeping rooms and kitchen enough to cook and sleep. Gas stove disconnected, no heat. Bathrooms and shower in another building and hot water was a blessing. No rodent droppings there. Bring all your own bedding and extra sheets, we kept everything including bedding in car when not in use. Also no signs of rodents in three days other than the sound of them in the walls.

We went here with my aging in-laws to avoid the hassle of tent camping. It was great to have a dry, warm, comfortable place to stay that took virtually no setup. Just throw bedding or sleeping bags on the beds and camp was set up. We didn't have to bring any pots or pans or dishes or silverware, all was amply provided with quality kitchenware. The water from the tap was cool and good tasting. The cabin's septic has been inop for many years but the septic for the old bunkhouse two buildings over works just fine and it has two toilet stalls and a hot shower, so can't complain too much. We did see some signs of mice in the morning so be sure to put your food in the fridge or in coolers or Tupperware overnight. Just anything mouse proof. The propane fireplace/heater kept the cabin warm and gave it great ambiance after dark. Hope to be able to go again.

Been renting the Magee cabin for years and years, excellent destination...Unfortunately the cabin code was incorrect this year, but we managed to get in.

Our vacation at Magee was a five star experience, but I can't give it five stars due to the water troubles and lack of communication. We knew that the cabin water/septic isn't working but were shocked to arrive and find out that the warehouse bathrooms and shower were closed to us. We were not notified of this change prior to arriving at the cabin. The Forest Service did provide plenty of boxed water in case the water to the cabin ran out. I love Magee and hope that the water and septic problems can be fixed. Its always a relaxing experience and would recommend it!

not only did the bathroom in the cabin not work (we knew about that in advance), the other bathroom facilities that are 200 feet away were locked from the inside and we had no way in. we had the correct lock combo but the door was locked from the inside.

Dirty, mouse droppings on bed. Toilet a big inconvenience, didn't get a refund for not staying 3rd night with the mice.

The cabin was clean with a good stock of wood and plenty of gas powered lanterns. The plumbing was out, so the walk over to the other restroom facilities was a bit of a drag. The location has good access to several hiking trails with good views of the valley and there are trout in the creek that will cooperate. The yard and house set up were good for kids. We had great weather on one of the days and got to see five or six small planes land at the airstrip. The highlight of the trip was hearing elk bugle each morning around sunrise.

Pretty pricey for what you get. Still cannot use bathroom in cabin, which is really tough for little ones, really everyone, especially at night. For $100.00 per night especially. The birds in the warehouse also dive bomb you on you way to use the facilities. Had a homeless person hanging around too.
