This site is pretty and allows for exploration of nearby features, such as the beach. It is easy to reach from the trail and large. The understory does not hide the tent area from the view of people on the trail, but there is little traffic, and the distance is huge. It has a large picnic table, two fixed benches, a fire ring, a remote latrine, a bear pole, AND a bear locker. The sounds of the waves down the bank across the trail make for a soothing experience. If you are coming from the dock, be sure to fill your water bottles near the Juniper Flats Group Site.

Love Grand Island and would normally give it five stars. Two of the beach staircases for the West campgrounds have been closed for years. Waiting for this to open back up to more easily enjoy the Lake Superior shoreline.

Great mid-island location with plenty of space and nice pine-needle ground to set up a tent.

Beautiful location, soft pine needle ground, easy access to magnificent views. A bit closer to other campsites than some of the other locations on the island, but sill very private. We would absolutely stay here again.

Beautiful site with lots of space. Large fire pit, two benches, a latrine, a bear box and a pole. Site is located just across the trail from a beach, but sadly it's currently closed off due to being washed out by high water levels. Still, I was very impressed with the site and greatly appreciated the firewood they provide. Site is a ~3.5 mile hike from the dock and about half a mile north of a source of clean drinking water.

Beautiful location with a secluded beach a short walk away. An added plus that there was firewood provided. The bugs are very bad and the hike out is not for the faint of heart.

I almost hate to rave about our camping experience because it will only encourage others to reserve a site on Grand Island. The campsite is about 4 miles from the boat dock. It took our family of 5 (62, 39,39, 10, 7 years old) about 45 minutes on bikes with cargo carts. The site is HUGE with 2 benches and a fire ring. A small amount of firewood is provided and you can collect fallen branches in the woods. The water is high in Lake Superior so you have to walk about 50 yards to the nearest steps to the beach. This beach is smooth sandstone bottom like that of a swimming pool. You can walk or bike ride about a 1/2 mile south to get water from the faucet and hit the beach at that spot and explore the many sea caves along the shore (only on a calm day). From the campsite you can bike ride all around the island and see many beautiful cliffs that compare to Pictured Rocks. If you want a perfect sandy beach you can ride to the east side of the island to Trout Bay. BTW, because of the sandstone floor of the lake the water is very comfortable. ENJOY!

Outstanding site, loved the size and view. Pit toilet and bear pole and bin were an added bonus. Great proximity to open- water, pump water, latrines and hikes. Nearby firewood bin was an unexpected plus. We cannot speak more highly about our experience on Grand Island and at the Gamefence campsite. Don’t forget to bring environmentally friendly toilet paper, bug spray, and water containers.
