Our first time at big bend and we loved it! This spot was perfect for our family and the views were great! Neighbors didnt feel too close to us.

Very secluded location. Campsites are a bit close but no closer than most other sites. Didn't expect flush toilets and drinking fountain/bottle filler and wash sink so that was a bonus.

Great place. Quiet and beautiful. Only reason it wasn't excellent was that the park didn't have the water spigots working at the horse corrals. Had to use a bucket to fill up his water from down the way. Took awhile.

It was my first trip to the Guadalupe Mountains and I loved it. Dog Canyon is a very secluded and quiet campground. We did not see many campers, and we enjoyed the solitude. Although the campground is only seven miles north of the Guadalupe Peak trailhead, we had to drive nearly two hours to get there because there is not a road directly over the mountain. It was worth it though and I recommend this campground over the Pine Springs campground because of the solitude.

Wonderful remote campground with water and flush toilets. WiFi was available on the porch of the ranger station; there is no cell service out here. Had a skunk and a couple javelinas come visit our site.

Too windy in the spring.

Beautiful site! We did a wonderful 8-mile (16m RT) backpack from Dog Canyon to McKittrick Ridge Camp.

I went to this remote (53 miles from the main highway) campground to let Labor Day blow over before I got back on the road. It didn't work. Six of the nine sites were taken. that was Ok, but one site had a couple of guys who stayed up long after everyone else and were loud like the campground itself was their living room. Glad to see them go after one night. there was also a family of six who sprawled out right next to the bathroom and had screaming kids from dawn 'til night. They left on Labor Day morning, too. Just showed me that nowhere is safe from three-day weekends. No sign of a ranger here and the Visitor's Center was closed for the whole weekend. On the bright side, once the tourists left, the wildlife moved back in immediately (wild turkeys and deer).

Not obvious from the recreation.gov web site: you can't pull your car up to a tent campsite. Parking is in a small parking lot just above the tent sites.
The campsite was almost perfect. The only drawback was a morning of continuously barking dogs from the staff housing area.

The campground is fairly remote, though it has running water in the bathrooms with a place to wash dishes. I tented, those sites are a very short walk (15 seconds or less) from the parking area, all tucked into the trees for some good shade.

Stayed in sites 5 & 6 for family Spring Break trip for 2 nights. Would have loved to stay one more night even with the cold nights! The stars are epic and the campground in small and peaceful. Turkeys trot thru daily and the loop trail makes for a great morning and sunset walk. Bathrooms pretty clean but only one woman/man unless you walk to the ranger station. Worth the drive. Be prepared to haul your gear up and down as you can’t park at your spot (hike in). Also stop at Sitting Bull falls on the way. We left to go to Big Bend and took the dirt road to El Paso which was a great way to see more of the area but dusty!!! Also the ridge drive to Five Points scenic views are great. Stop at the first turn out along the ridge- there is a path down to a great spot on the cliffs.

Way off the main path. We were left alone in peace and quiet.

Nice quiet campground with only a few people around in early January. The hiking trails from the campground are top notch. The wifi worked good. The campground is very dark at night as lighting is kept to the bare minimum. I've never seen so many stars.

Dog Canyon was quiet and peaceful. The campsite was clean and neat. Bathroom facility with flush toilet is excellent and very clean. The volunteer camp host David was very helpful and gave us hints on our hike to Lost Peak. The Wifi signal at the ranger station was strong. Zero cell service. If you are looking for solitude and quiet, this is the place for you. We will definitely be back to Dog Canyon.

I love GUMO, and have for 30+ years. It’s kind of a shame that so many have discovered it recently. Regardless, it’s a wonderful park, and still much less crowded than other parks within a day or two drive.
Dog Canyon this trip. Rangers/host Brian, Seven and David were friendly, professional and helpful. This is a different side of the park, a bit more austere than the Ponderosa and Douglas fir accessible from Pine Springs. Beautiful none the less, and much less crowded.
Lost Peak is a great hike & a great place to watch a sunset. Take a headlamp & hike back in the dark. It’s wonderful.

Props to two Rangers on the Pine Springs side; LE Ranger Brian Cohane and park fixture Michael Haynie. Wonderful assets to the NPS and always a pleasure to catch up with. A couple of really good guys and equally concerned with resource protection and visitor enjoyment.
We’re lucky to have such a place in Texas to visit. Take care of it.
