I have been to Cataloochee Campground a few times over the last 20 years. My favorite time is during the elk rutting season. The elk come out into the meadow at sunup and sundown for many great photo opportunities. The location is a difficult drive which limits crowds. A positive for me! You must take in all supplies, food, water etc.On this trip, I want to thank the camp host for warning me of the coming flood (Hurricane Helene). So, I left a night early and avoided potential complications from wind and water.

Been camping here since I was a child and will as long as I'm able. 2 years in a row now that the week of memorial day had no rain! Yay!

We love Cataloochee and always have. But things are getting run down and in need of repair. The way they trees that were cut were just pushed out at edge of campsites are a danger to children. The road is in the worst shape we have ever seen it. Cataloochee is beautiful it terrible to see it in the shape it is even the guard rails that were broken two years ago are still not fixed.

Secluded, quiet, serene & beautiful.
Definitely a drive on the mountain to get back there.
Small campground which we loved.

The campground was clean, spacious, and in a great location! One thing we were definitely prepared for by reading other reviews is the complete lack of cell reception. A VERY nice thing to unplug and not worry about anything for the time we spent there. The drive in was challenging pulling a camper behind (even moreso on the way out as we climbed the mountain on a gravel road). There are many hairpin turns, and the road is very narrow, but overall in good condition. The Elk roaming around the site were amazing, and we saw some snakes as well. The volunteer Ranger (Ginger) was amazing, very informative, and as friendly as can be. The site itself was clean and well manicured. We had some friends meet us there, and the two sites we reserved were close enough to be together. There was a picnic table (very heavy and durable), a gravel pad for table or tent, a pole to hang trash on, and a fire ring. The bathrooms were cleaned every morning, and we were never concerned about a gross experience. There was a utility sink to clean dishes, and two spots to distribute potable water. Overall we were very impressed with the whole area and have no complaints!
