The camp is isolated and difficult to reach because the main roads leading to it have been washed out, possible permanently. The camp itself is not very large and has no hookups, hence it is mainly tents. The sites in the center of the campground are tightly packed, while most along the edge are spacious. This is the cost for having close access to a large number of Elk along the road and walking trail. One must come prepared as there is no stores within 40 minutes of the camp or firewood.

First time camping here and it was everything and more. Beautiful, quiet and peaceful. My group didnt make it before dark but just after. Reading reviews I worried about the road but it wasnt bad. Coming at night I could see headlights and knew when to expect someone around the next curve. Just take your time whether it be day or night and youll be fine. Getting to the campground after dark was fun since I reserved a site in the middle of the campground and couldnt find the way to get to my site. After a few trips around I stopped and asked someone and there is a road that goes down the middle. A sign there to direct sites #20-27 would be awesome and helpful:) Staying there for several nights I saw this very thing happen to others who arrived after dark. One night a site on the outskirts had a bear coming close and they were yelling at him to stay away. Be prepared for that.We went towards the end of October and still got to hear the big ol boys bugle a time or two and they were magnificent. Loved seeing the old homestead and other places nearby. After we packed up we spent the evening in Maggie Valley before returning home. We will be back!!

Great campground. Not too many sites but with attractions of something similar to Cades Cove. I like the smaller campground. Great place to chill and see wildlife and hike.

We stayed 5 nights at the Cataloochee campground in the Great Smoky Mountains in September 2021. We had a great trip. The campground is very well maintained. The bathrooms were cleaned regularly. They had potible water. The sites were clean and well maintained. The rangers were very helpful and VERY friendly. There was an unruly camper there. The camp host had to have a talk with them. She was very respectful to them. They acted ugly, but the camp host maintained her composure and handled the situation very professionally. We will be back. Cataloochee is a beautiful place. We got to see a bunch of elk!!!

Very well maintained campground. Bathrooms are cleaned and trash emptied. Camp Host checked sites regularly. The Campground is a couple of miles from the fields where the Elks graze. The first morning, we saw a large Bull Elk which gave us very impressive Bugle Calls with his herd of about 10 Cow Elks. On another occasion we drove another half mile to the end of the road, parked the the car and walked over the bridge to a much large field. There were 4 Bull Elks and many Cows of various sizes. Dawn and dusk are best for Elk watching.
