This was our first time camping at Bolar Mountain Recreation Area. Decided to try something new after camping every summer at Douthat State Park. We were very happy with everything about our stay at Bolar Mountain. Our camp site was clean and provided plenty of space for our family. We liked the nice tree and vegetation cover around our campsite, which made it very private and shaded from the summer sun. Maintenance on the lake made the water level a bit lower than normal (we were told), so our lakeside campsite was a bit further from the lake than usual, but this was not a major issue. We enjoyed fishing and kayaking on the lake. The bathrooms were well-maintained and clean. No camp host during our stay, and no firewood available for purchase (as we were led to believe there would be). We understand that staffing is still an issue, so hope that services will improve when we visit next year. We were able to scavenge for firewood near our campsite, so the firewood availability issue was not a problem. We will most certainly camp at Bolar Mountain again.

Nice time, too many loud jet skis and power boats during the day to enjoy the Lakehurst come evening it was very nice. Strong cell at overlook at the top of Bolar loop trail.

Nice lake out in the mountains! No cell coverage on the lake, but a hike to the outlook from the picnic grounds provides a great view and strong Verizon signal!

Stayed two nights in late June at Site 53, one of the premier sites with private access to the lake. Lake Moomaw is stunningly beautiful, calm, and cool enough to enjoy on an inflatable lounge; wear water shoes, as the lakeshore is very rocky. The campsite is well shaded, spacious, and on soft soil/gravel so you can stake your tent. There's a picnic table and fire pit with grill. A short walk leads you to four separate bathrooms each with a shower. Firewood is available from the camp host ($6). A public beach and camp store (basic necessities, nothing perishable) are just a short drive away, as are several places to start hiking (I recommend Grouse Point Overlook, an easy, 15-25 minute hike uphill but not too steep, with great views). The only downside was our neighbors - mostly large families in RVs making a ton of noise throughout the day. If you're looking for a quiet getaway, this might not be the place, or you can hope to get lucky and have quieter neighbors. Also, while we were happy to unplug during our camping trip, there is zero cell service (if you have AT&T).
