My only complaint is not with the campground but this lame reservation system that has basically eliminated the ability for the people who live here to just go find a spot for a weekend. You have to be up early and online when the system opens for reservations and it has been sold out immediately as soon as it is open. The rolling opening dates are impossible to plan a trip for a certain time of the year without have to reserve either days earlier than you would like or later than you would like. This system SUCKS and needs to go away, or at least give locals a 5 day window before the rest of the world can take away any chance of getting a spot.
It was lovely enough that I won’t take away a star for the downstream shooting that started between 7 and 8 each morning. Evidently there’s a range and quarries nearby. At times we wondered if the semi-automatic fire was at a propane tank target. Either that or they were shooting cannons, too. But it didn’t last all day.
Fishing was fun. Just remember to fish with barbless lures (bait not allowed) if spin casting because the bulls and cutthroat are not keepers. And please respect the no-fishing zone around Big Creek. I was the only one fishing in sight on “our” downstream gravel beach during our two-night stay. We saw a half-dozen flyfishing rafts and kayaks and want to return next year and try it ourselves.
It was nice to have a food safe to ourselves and nicer to not see any threatening wildlife.
That 11am checkout is a bear, though.
