During our stay at the Smiling River Campground our daughter needed to notify us of an emergency that had happened at home. I want to give a HUGE shoutout to the Smiling River Camp Host (Chris), Forest Service personnel, and employees at the Camp Sherman Store who all went out of their way to get the message to us as we did not have cell phone service at this camp ground.

We love this place. It is close to Bend and quiet and beautiful. The only negative aspect is that the guy next to us kept his generator on for hours at a time. There should be a time limit on generator use. Our camp host Becky was awesome!

Campground host wasn't available and reservations placards on campsites hadn't been updated so it was hard to know which if any sites might be available for a night. Nothing indicates which are first come camp sites and since there is no cell service it is makes it nearly impossible to know where you can camp without a reservation. However, if you get a site you won't be disappointed. Quiet and clean is why we come back to Smiling River any chance we can for the last 20+ years.

not enough notice about seasonal water turnoff.
Campfire ring nearly 3/4 full with ash and soaking wet-made it difficult to safely use it.

Let me FIRST SAY that my family has been camping, on the metolius river since 1968, yes, that's over 50 years!
We are now into the FOURTH GENERATION!
This year was different. There was no campground host and several of the bathrooms were closed due to not being usable because they had not been cleaned out...disgusting!
They 1 lady, who came to count cars, was told about the issues on Mon., July 27th, said she would come back on Wed, that she would order cleaning for the toilets, we left on Thur., it had not been done, we didn't see her again either. Funds need to be reallocated and Oregon, not California, needs to oversee our campgrounds and parks.
