2022 is a good year for Lava Lake. Lake is beautiful and off season clearing of campsites and grounds was very nice. Camp Host is keeping vault toilets and areas in top shape. Expect mosquitos because of late season snow and spring rain. This is good campground.

Campsites are very very close together, so if you want privacy, this isn't for you.It is a nice campground though and mostly well-maintained. Bathrooms on our last day were pretty bad, so I think consistency on busy weekends is needed.Nice having the store right there to be able to buy ice or just treats for kids.

There are only a few large trees left in this forested campground, most trees now are small and it seemed disappointing from a forest health point of view. The lake is lovely with views of the volcanoes in the background. It's less developed than some of the other lakes to the north. So if you have your own boat, it's wonderful to go out in the morning, but the winds can easily pick up in the afternoon. There's a delightful old 1950's cabin at the edge of the lake and the campground, which is now a store. There are a few old roads for mountain biking. Elk Lake to the north has an interesting old guard station and canoe rentals if you don't own a boat.
