it's a simple good cabin, we used it as base camp to explore yellowstone and it worked out great!

The cabin was fantastic...clean and cozy. The only reason it doesn't have a five star is because of the approach and location. Disclaimer: We are not people who give a low score because of something random that has nothing to do with a cabin or the approach...like "my son flaked on me so 1-star" or "the hunting trip was bad so 2-stars"The walk on the highway and the walk on Denny Creek road were shorter than expected. We dropped our backpacks and snowshoes at the turnoff for Denny Creek and parked at the Buttermilk Trailhead (which was not marked going west and was .65 miles from Denny Creek Rd) My wife favors 4 stars because walking on the highway with icy conditions was definitely a tad sketch. We walked in and it was only 1.6 miles to the cabin. The cabin is pretty big with two rooms and a huge wood stove. The bedroom gets really warm but the living room/kitchen remains much cooler. If you melt snow for water and make a tiny fire to use the "eyes" or "burners" on the actual cooking stove in the kitchen (NOT in the larger oven portion), the kitchen warms up as well. There was plenty of wood and a very nice pit toilet. The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because even in winter, it was pretty busy around here. The cabin sits right on Denny Creek Road and it is really popular for snowmobiling. In the summer, it is a regular road, there are several cabins in site and I imagine it is buzzing with activity. If you like more people around then you might give it five stars.A great cabin with a very easy in!

My border collies and I had a great experience, again. Basin Station is my favorite forest service cabin. I once again brought along a temporary fence to put on the west side of the property so the dogs would not wander on to the county road. On Monday October 7th I got some very nice photos of the Aurora Borealis with the scenic barn in the foreground. Thank You.

Very cool and rustic cabin. Wood fire heater kept us very warm even in the cold temperatures. Plenty of firewood and kindling were provided along with the basic kitchen necessities. Outhouse is new and very clean. Highly recommend!

Cabin was much larger than wed anticipated. The new outhouse was in great shape and wonderful to use. Just make sure you have enough water with you, but wed definitely go back again!

The cabin is really clean and comfortable. The area is beautiful and quiet, though there is some local traffic on the road out front. There are hiking trails and scenic walking. It's about a 20 min drive to the entrance to Yellowstone NP, 10-15 minutes to the town of W. Yellowstone. I had cell reception the whole time. Highly recommend for anyone looking to be comfortable but also somewhat secluded and with limited distractions.

There were no frying pans so I called the ranger station and was told I had to make do with what was there but miraculously a brand new frying pan showed up the next morning and then the next day a few more sauce pans appeared on the porch. A big thank you for that really topped off a wonderful week at the cabin with good friends and family.

What a dream it was to stay here! Some updates to the listing: the road to the cabin is paved, mattresses and cleaning supplies are provided. AT&T had great service. We used the wood stove and the wood was easy to access and we'll stocked. The outhouse was clean and new.

Spent a week in June 2023. The new outhouse is top notch, as are the foundation repairs to the cabin and a new counter top. I brought along a temporary vinyl fence again to put along the west side so my border collies dont wander on to the county road and have a disaster that would ruin the trip. It did its job. Basin Station is my favorite forest service cabin, because of all the open space to the east and north, and then you can cross the road and hike west up towards Lionhead, all which are forest service land. We did that often at dusk, making sure to yell hey griz once in a while. That back barn is incredibly photogenic in the evening light, and I got some good shots of me and the dogs, which you will be able to see on journeywest dot com.

The road to the cabin was snowed in so we were not able to get to the cabin so we did not stay in the cabin
Contacted Will Smith at Forest service in West Yellowstone and he was no help.

The cabin was clean and there was plenty of chopped wood for use. New mattress pads were comfy. I was surprised to find that the pots and pans were missing and the cupboards were bare- previous years there had been plenty of pots for boiling water and cooking utensils. Also lots of food left behind, which is a kind gesture but not ideal for keeping critters out.
One of the neighbors plowed a single lane so we were actually able to drive until about 1/2 mile from the cabin and drop our stuff off for a shorter ski in. Got to explore further up the road to the campground and saw a fox and bald eagle by the water.

The cabin is comfortable with a large wood stove in the sleeping area, and another wood cooking stove in the kitchen/dining area. I stayed during a snowstorm in 2019, and found the bedroom stove kept the cabin so warm that I would go outside to chop wood to cool off a little. There is a large open space behind the cabin with an irrigation ditch crossing it. The front of the cabin faces a county road, which gets a fair amount of traffic to Hebgen Lake, especially on summer weekends. This makes it unsafe for dogs. On my last trip I brought along a temporary fence to put along the split rail fence in the front for my dog’s safety. It did its job. The kitchen counter has seen years of use, and I would recommend bringing along a cutting board or some sort of cover to place over the counter for food cleanliness. There are grizzlies in the hills just west of the cabin. The owner of the Diamond P Ranch, which is 1.7 miles from the cabin, told me he had two grizzlies at the door of his house in August 2020. A grizzly was seen on one of the Diamond P trail rides the week of August 8th, 2021. I would hear coyotes yipping every evening in August 2021. It was a good place to view the Perseid Meteor Showers.

Great cabin, wonderful location quite near the west gate of Yellowstone! There are several nearby cabin homes, so it is not isolated. The cabin itself was charming and stayed warm despite cold nighttime temps.

We loved staying at the Basin Station cabin. The area was beautiful and peaceful. Water is easy to get at the campground just a few minutes drive down the road. It was so much better than staying in the busy town of West Yellowstone. We enjoyed taking day trips to Yellowstone to explore. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because I heard a mouse or some kind of rodent running around in the attic on our 3rd night there that kept me up for a while.

This is such a beautiful and special place. Understand there is no water or electricity, but it’s like camping except you have walls and mattresses. The stars at night are incredible! Find some peace and enjoy.

The cabin was a good base camp for visiting Yellowstone. The stove was great and we were actually able to use it to cook a few things and heat up some water.

Hiked 2.8miles from Buttermilk TH to cabin in the dark, and somehow missed the road but made it to cabin eventually. Wind blows snow into decent drifts making hiking a bit slow but doable. Restocked wood, swept as best we could, but the station could use a cleaning. Chimney takes a while to heat up to draw smoke, so remember to keep the bedroom fireplace door closed. No mice on 3/26, and we saw a fox outside!

I have stayed here before and will again BUT this stay was ridiculous and USFS made it that way! There are no screens on the windows and no curtains. The hot summer sun beats through those windows but you can’t open the windows to try to cool it off without the mosquitoes pouring in. There are two screen doors which would be great but there is no way to hook them closed. With small children or pets just steps from an incredibly busy street it’s really bad. I used a dog leash to tie one screen door to a bed and we slept with the door open. I would not normally do that but it was just too hot to sleep without doing it. Really bad!!!
