One of the cleanest forest service cabins Ive ever been to. Great pit toilet too! Road hadnt been plowed but with winter driving skills and a subaru with 8.7 in of clearance made it fine to the pull out designated for the cabin off the single lane road past the reservoir and palisades trailhead. We bright a snow shovel that came in handy to dig out the spot and continue the tradition of digging out the path to the cabin, pit toilet, and wood shed. We used a standard plastic kid sled to haul our stuff up the path. Came with my 66 year old mom and she was able to make the walk easy peasy. Will definitely be back in the future with friends to use the beds in the loft and crosscountry ski especially now that I saw that the crescent lake trail connects to the trail at the cabin.

We spent 5 nights at this beautiful cabin. It is very well taken care of by the forest service and by most of the visitors. New roof, new paint and new window screens. The accessible outhouse is also new. No mice inside the cabin during our visit but we did see a couple them scurrying around on the porch outside at night. We enjoyed the hiking trail right from the cabin with an unforgettable meadow and views of the reservoir. Also enjoyed the Grotto Falls trail at the end of the road. Took our raft out on the reservoir. Nice views from the property and excellent star gazing. We also enjoyed a wicked thunder and lightning storm one night from the porch. Not much wildlife on our trip but we did have the special treat of viewing 2 mountain goats in our binoculars on several occasions across the way on Sleeping Giant Mountain! Not the most private cabin though with several people on different occasions inviting themselves up from the trail and up the driveway. A very nice cabin in a beautiful setting, just know you may not have complete privacy.

Great cabin and location! It was especially nice to read the history book about the cabin and the Log Book of previous visits.

Our kids (7 and 4) loved it. Great area for sledding and xc skiing in the winter. Easy to cook meals on a cast iron skillet right on the wood stove. Just a short walk up from the gate-- we brought a sled to pull up our supplies.

Had a great time enjoying all the fresh snow. The cabin is now stocked the with most everything you need to cook meals. Pots, pans, skillets, tea & coffee pots, plates, cups, and utensils. Enjoyed the views and skiing right out the door.

Such a beautiful cabin! Skied in from the reservoir for a couple night stay, though also easily accessible from the road. Cozy, clean, quiet, great access to surrounding trails.

Hmmm, awesome spot, and we have been to this cabin many, many times. We did not give it an excellent rating because: With the price at $60 per night now, maybe the road could be cleared into the cabin now, since the main road is cleared to the Grotto Falls/ice climbing/Hyalite Lake trailhead parking? The rent is high, compared to other similar cabins in the state.

Beyond incredible. Majestic views, clean cabin, very cozy. Can’t wait to return in the winter when it must be spectacular.

Cabin is cute and cozy, with a front porch perfect for reading and taking in the views. Beds rather than cots made for comfortable sleeping. There are trails galore in the area. Cabin turnoff is unmarked so look for the padlocked gate on the right as you drive from the reservoir.

Great cabin, very easy access. Great stock of wood and a cozy night!
Cabin is in a great location for cross-country skiing. Close to road but relatively secluded. The adjacent hillside meadow is a popular spot for kids to build and use ski jumps, so expect some nearby commotion on powder days. It's helpful to bring a snow shovel to create space for parking near the gate if there has been a lot of snow.
Stayed at Window Rock for a cross-country skiing trip and it was lovely. Access was easy for winter standards. Just parked at one of the pullouts 1/4 mile down the road and skied up to the cabin. The fireplace was super cozy and kept the place warm all night. Lots of trails to access from the cabin. There's Westshore which can be skied all the way to the Blackmore parking lot. Then, on the other side, there's a trail that eventually connects to the parking area near Chisholm which connects to the Wildhorse and Maxey Cabin trails. Great place to stay for a winter weekend at Hyalite. It should be even better when Window Rock gets its repairs soon.
It was obvious that people take very good care of the cabin! Thank you everyone in the Park service. It also appears somebody from outside the cabin is currently taking wood from the shed almost each day with a sled.
Window Rock Cabin is very accessible from Bozeman, but secluded, cozy and surrounded by spectacular beauty.
