It’s a little pricey, but the local kayak tours are very nice additions to the trip. Lots of great knowledge about the park and area makes it worth the cost. Plenty of great trails and the camping is great. Insects can be an issue, bring lots of bug spray and maybe target the colder months if planning to camp. Overall great experience with tons of kind people all over the park.

We camped at The Bluff Campground which was clean and well spaced. Unfortunately we had some campers show up late after we were asleep. They made quite a racket setting up camp with high beam lights illuminating our tent. Thought they were finally done when they started up the air pump for their mattress. Then they were up early making a racket as they packed up and left. Not a knock on the campground, just inconsiderate campers. Hiking trails were nice and well marked. We had originally thought about back country camping but really saw no where you could comfortably set up a tent and campsite. Ask a ranger first before planning a back country trip. One complaint, the potable water available at the visitor center tasted horrible.

This campsite is definitely a walk from the visitor center (probably 0.75 miles away), so be prepared for that when planning your trip. The campground was clean and a very nice, secluded area in the park making nature feel incredibly surrounding.

Our tent site at the Bluff campground was well kept and we had plenty of room for our tent and a cooking tarp to stay out of the rain. The picnic table was a nice plus.

I submitted a backcountry camping permit with a route that was checked by a ranger and ok'ed. We were about to head to the trailhead when we realized the map didn't connect the king snake trail to the rest of the park trails. Apparently many bridges are washed out and due to it being a designated wilderness area it may take 6 months or even Longer for the bridges to be rebuilt. Things seem to wash out quite often so maybe the park could come up with contingency funding for the next bridge when they fix these ones? I wish the ranger had mentioned that the bridges were out when our permit was approved.

Also all the campground booking happens online and the staff are completely hands off about it, which I'm sure is an upper level decision but it would be nice if staff had some agency regarding site bookings.

So, this is my nearest national park and I want to support it, but it's kind of a mixed visiting experience. I'd say about half the people on the boardwalk complied with mask wearing, not enough.

Without the king snake trail there isn't enough space for two nights of backpacking, so I hope they work on fixing the bridges.

Beautiful, wild park, amazing owls and other birds, but still some kinks to work out.

Congaree was exactly what I'd hoped it'd be! Except even better. The campsite was a perfect hike from the car, and the view from our tent was beautiful. I heard barred owls talking all through the night, and I was sad to leave the tall loblolly pines. 10/10 would recommend!

Congaree was certainly a surprising beauty! Longleaf is the closest you will get to car camping so if that is your jam look no further. The boardwalk is phenomenal! Make sure to grab the self guided tour booklet before starting and don’t forget your raincoat. Already planning a trip back.
