Campsite #42: The campsite is nicely nestled in the trees and secluded from the site immediately to the west. The site pad is paved with a picnic table and fire pit. One side of the classic bench-style picnic table has the center portion of the bench removed, so "the chef" can stand close to the surface of the table and yet there is seating on either side - very clever! It was raining heavily on my campsite reservation day. The site slopes to the southeast, so the fire pit area was surrounded by water 2" deep. That was a deal-breaker for me . . . I bugged out after hanging out for 3 hours hoping for a break in the weather. I was Jeep-camping but didn't break out the tailgate tent, due to the heavy rain and waders needed to enjoy the fire pit.I will definitely return! Lovely site in the woods, in beautiful Portage Valley.

Great place to Stay. Some spots can be reserved and others are on a look and seebasis. We had one night reserved and could easily find a spot for a second night to expend our stay. Be aware of proximity of bearsencountered around our RV. Great experience so far.

Beautiful, Spacious, and Quiet! We will stay here every chance we get. The sites were spread out with plenty of room. The campground was laid out in a very natural way and felt so serene! We wished we had stayed several days instead of one night.

This was our favorite stay this summer! Super close to the Portage visitor center and on the Blue Ice Trail. Sites were well laid out and plenty of room between. We are already planning another camp trip there again next summer.

The campground itself is one of the best in Alaska. it is also one of my personal favorites. Having said that, I would like to voice my observations from my stay this year. We typically like to camp here in late May or early June when the weather is nice, the fiddlehead ferns are blooming, and there is still some snow to play in. This year the campground was a total mess with filthy campsites, mud, spruce needles, last years moldy leaves, and overall very difficult to camp in without trashing everything we stepped on. I understand it is a rainforest and prone to these conditions but it would be nice if the park service could clean up some of the debris, sweep out the sites, clean up all the downed tree branches that were laying everywhere! The bike trails had numerous trees and bushes that were mostly if not completely blocking some of the trails. I stopped and removed as many as I could so we could ride. All of this should have been taken care of before the campground opened! Other than that, we still enjoyed the beauty there, and had the opportunity to see a black bear 3 feet from our camper door! He was continually roaming the campground looking for an easy meal. We will be back to this campground, it is lovely, just clean the place up before it opens!

Very nice campground in the woods. Space was larger than expected. All sites have heavy duty picnic tables with wheel chair access to them. Various hiking trails are accessible from the campground as well as a fish viewing site (although no fish seen this time of year). Close to Whittier as well as the visitor center. Would stay here again if in the area. We had reservations although there are first come, first sites available. There appeared to be some sites available each day we were there.
