It's a beautiful, mostly flat hike to the campground, with the only real hill appearing in the final stretch. Some of the cleanest bathrooms I've ever experienced while camping, which is not something I expected to find 30 miles from the mainland. The wind breaks at each site are incredibly well built and sturdy, and a one or two person tent can fit underneath the roof of the structure. These structures also serve as great shelters from the rain as I learned first hand when an evening storm overtook the campground. The adorable island foxes are all over the campground, so make sure to properly store your food in the provided fox boxes. If you want a more unobstructed view of the nearby canyon, ocean and Limuw, get an odd numbered site.

The views are magnificent, the campground is pristine, and the options are endless on Santa Rosa!

Nestled in a lush valley, this campground is gorgeous. When we were there in late April, the valley walls were dotted with yellow, blue, red, and purple flowers. I saw foxes darting around the edges of the campground often (be sure to stow all food/scented items in the fox boxes at each campsite).A 1.2 mile hike from the ferry drop-off, the campground is a short walk from cherry creek canyon and the white sand beaches. The facilities are surprisingly modern with flush toilets, running potable water, and lighting. Trash cans are not available, and all trash needs to be hiked back out.The campsite was extremely windy for a couple of days we were there (late April) but the temp never dropped below 50 and the wind wall did an alright job of keeping us sheltered; the canvas tent was flapping/rattling some throughout the night, but we hiked enough distance that we slept with no problem.Best hikes we enjoyed: East Point, Lobo Canyon, Ryan Mtn, Torrey Pines, and the shorter Cherry Canyon trail.

Santa Rosa Island at Easter 2024 was wonderful. The rains held off until evening. The wildlife, when you have time for long day hikes, is outstanding. The emptiness and space and history..

Great island for backpacking and hiking. Lots of diverse scenery and wildlife as well as solitude on the trails to fully allow you to enjoy nature. Water Canyon campground is well maintained and the bathroom building is a great facility to have on site. Come well prepared with everything you would take if backpacking out in the wilderness and you will have an excellent time.

The island is gorgeous. The National Park Service staff were extremely helpful. The bathroom at the campsite was spotless. Trip highlight was hike to Lobos Canyon, but there are lots of good hikes.

The boat ride on Island Packers was also very fun.

Be prepared for wind, cool marine weather, and sun!

My second visit to Santa Rosa-what an amazing place. And I went to San Miguel for two days before Santa Rosa-what an incredible contrast between the two islands.

A wonderful place and very windy. The shelters at Water Canyon are welcome and work partially to shelter your tent from the wind. Great water and flush toilet with sink in the camp, very welcome and make it in easy place to stay. It is also a quick and relatively flat walk from the pier. We saw 100's of leopard sharks in the shallows on the beach near the pier from above, an amazing sight.

Nice campground with clean and flushable toilets. The wind can be very strong.

Beautiful island. Stunning wild flowers (mid-March 2022). Nice camp ground. Great hikes. Worth visiting more than once.

Be prepared for wind and stake your tent down well in the wind break! I suggest moving the picnic tables out and having your tents in the breaks. Beautiful island. Lobo Canyon Trail is a must as well as the Torrey Pines. Looking to get out to east point some day. Great place to be adventurous. Lots more foxes than last time I went 5 years ago.

The only way this island could be better is if there was a Starbucks on every beach... haha. Rustic, scenic, tranquil and most importantly... almost no people.

Incredible island with an amazing variation of terrain and things to see and do.

This island is magical. I highly recommend spending time at the beach near the campgrounds. There are also many great hikes in any direction of the island. An extra feature is the very well kept, clean bathrooms and the rangers coming to check in with everyone and doing free guided hikes.
