Camping in Gallo makes you feel like you are living the life of the original occupants of Chaco Canyon! It's primitive, rugged and beautiful in so many ways. Just be sure to drink plenty of water!

In July of 2019 I camped for 5 days at Gallo CG in Chaco Canyon. The campground was in fair shape except for an obvious influx of the invasive weed Kochia. This needs attention as it will crowd out the native vegetation. It was quite hot during my stay and the lack of any shade structures in the campground was commented on by several other visitors. The lavatories were kept very clean and were adequate for the number of campers during my visit. Park Rangers made regular visits and ensured campground rule were followed. My goals on this trip were to closely examine all the major ruins in the main canyon, to hike the established trails, and to visit some of the outlier archaeological sites. I greatly enjoyed my hikes and learned a lot about this remarkable site complex. My visit was made even more enjoyable by the information and advice offered by campground Host Tom Burge; a retired National Park Service archeologist. His knowledge of the Chacoan Culture and of southwestern archeology great helped me understand Chaco in the larger regional context. I will visit Chaco Canyon again in the near future.
