What an amazing experience to be able to camp right by the ancient ruins and look up to the same dark sky that the Chacoans saw over a thousand years ago. The camp host greeted us upon arrival and advised us on the best way to back our trailer into the spot. Note that the dirt roads into the canyon are rough coming in from the south and washboard coming from the north. Allow an extra hour if you are pulling a trailer.

The camp site had a large usable area with a good fire ring and picnic table. We also booked site 16 for family and the two sites together made a perfect area for family with the two corner spots. These two spots are low traffic. Neither spot has shade. Spot 15 needed lots of lift on one side to make the camper level. Vehicle lights shine in to the camper from the main road at night. Spot 16 needed minimal support to level the camper. Spot 15 could be accessed on the normal one way route to back in park a truck and pull behind camper. Spot 16 had to be accessed the wrong way to be able to back in park a truck and pull behind camper. There is plenty of room for a truck park once unhooked. The worst part of the main road takes about 20 minutes to travel the last 8-10 miles.

Love this area and the ruins. BUT, the roads in are worse than last time! We drove in from Hwy 550 abd out the back way toward Gallup. My motorhome was throughly shook up! Sadly we won't be going again.

Love the beauty and simplicity of the campground. Wish the last unpaved portion of the road from the North was grated better.

It is very nice. The restroom facilities are nice. It's your best option near the monument. It would be a long drive in with a trailer

I understand why we must drive 25 mi over unpaved road --- we need to learn the lesson, we need to get the message... & what better way!!We were charged $20 / night for 2 nights when we both have senior passes & I gave my number when I registered. Don't really begrudge you the extra money -- its just the idea that we were denied what we were entitled to.

Great camp ground, very clean bathrooms, with motion lighting. Gald to see limit sizes on RVs , tent camping locations large and flat. No generator noise ...hope it stays that way. Camp hosts were very friendly and humorous ! We were fortunate to attend two guide presentations by retiring ranger Steve of 22 yrs experience at Chaco. Weather was great for the 5 days . Hiked every trail in Canyon, mornings were mostly by ourselves on trail.

I highly recommend camping at Gallo CG in lieu of a day trip to Chaco. We stayed 3 nights, which was just about perfect! We had time to hike and explore the ruins. Yes, the road coming in is rough. (We came in the north entrance.) We were in an F350 dually with a truck camper. We took it slowly and did fine. I would NOT attempt to drive the road when the road is wet. Visiting Chaco had been our to-do list for YEARS! It did not disappoint!!

This place is remote and beautiful. The park has an amazing number of ruins and is located in a beautiful canyon where there is much to do and learn. There are no services nearby. Its 20 miles of rough, dirt and washboard roads to the nearest gas station. BUT the campground has water and a dump station year round. Park staff may tell you otherwise on the phone. In fact, they seem unaware of what is actually in the campground. There IS a dump station and potable water year round!!! The dump station is obvious. What is not obvious is that you CAN fill your fresh water tank in winter by connecting your hose to a faucet inside a closet-like utility room in the bathroom building, and do it year round. Sites are typical NPS small and there are NO hookups or electric. HOWEVER nice this place is, the 20 mile road into the area is a disaster. A scary washboard mess. It's so poorly maintained that if you go over 5 mph on much of the last 10 miles you will damage your car, RV, truck and/or trailer, as we found at our next stop when I realized our shower drain was disconnected. At first it is safe gravel, but after 10 miles it degrades to dirt, ruts and washboard. The washboard is the worst. And you will get stuck in the mud if it rains or snows. It doesn't matter that the NPS doesn't own the road, NPS visitors are basically the only traffic. They need to fix this. I cannot give this place more than 3 stars just because the road is so bad. We camped at Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Gallo Campground in a Travel Trailer.

If there are speed tests submitted for a campground the campsite icons will be colored based on the average download speed and the border will be colored based on the average upload speed.
In this example Campsite #123 has very good download speeds and decent upload speeds. If a campsite has a solid yellow color it means there was no data speed detected in the test(s). Clicking on a campsite icon reveals more details.
