If you are interested in Southwestern archeology and high desert landscape, this amazing, unique World Heritage Site with many incredible 1000 year old Native American multi-room structures in and above a remote canyon, plus lot of pictographs along canyon walls is a "must see" for you! One day would not be enough time for all there is to see - two days and three nights would be good - even longer would be better if you have the time and interest. Summer can be hot; late Spring and early Fall are better weather.Be prepared for miles of rough gravel road and essentially no services or supplies anywhere other than a nice bathroom at the campground. Plan to be completely self-contained. Take the time and prepare to hike the backcountry trails to: Pueblo Alto and the Jackson Stairway and canyon overlooks; the Peasco Blanco, pictographs, and the Super-Nova site trail; and the south loop trail to Tsin Kletsin; as well as the shorter trails from the campground itself.

I've stayed at this campground 3 times in the past year, and it needs a major update. A majority of tent sites are permanently closed due to a rockfall concerns, including the entire northern loop. Unfortunately, the entire campground now relies on a single bathroom facility, and those staying in a tent are limited to the less desirable interior units of the loop. There is also a shortage of dedicated RV sites, so you end up with RVs intermingled in the tent pad sites. I suggest the NPS re-designate sites near the entrance (#1-8) as dedicated RV, and restrict the eastern sites to tent only. This would help cut down on the generator noise tent campers have to deal with at night and make for a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

camp site was outstanding!

Regretfully the campground is getting smaller because of rock falls. This impacts tent camping because you are forced to be near/next to RV's who often don't observe the NO LIGHTS/NO GENERATOR policies.

Very nice campgrounds in a beautiful setting. Bring your own awning for shade, especially in hot months!

Fire pit was clean, camp host was nice. Restroom was very good with a cold water drinking fountain. I highly recommend the Visitors center sell Ice or have a vendor do it for a reasonable price, you have electric there, so why not in June, July, August... Safety Issue. Camp host had WiFi, so why not broadcast it a few hundred yards to the South, safety issue, people can be contacted and visitors can check on family members. So simple and inexpensive.

Gallo Campground was a great choice while visiting Chaco Culture. The nearest hotel is over an hour away. I was able to view the breathtaking starscape a lot more knowing that all I had to do was crawl into my sleeping bag afterwards instead of making a long drive in the dark. The stars were really amazing since there is so little light pollution out there (hence the hour plus drive).

We appreciated campfires are allowed. Good restrooms. Felt very safe. Take lots of water Gatorade and food as nothing is available and no cell service. But the trade off of ruins all around is worth it. Visitors Center very informative and open Sat Sun. Being older we took solar lights and set our tents up between two sites so we could walk back and forth. We were confronted by a semi rude rv camper that our lights were not welcomed. I understood so we had to minimize our light. Remember it's preferred as a night light site and as little light and noise as possible is courteous. It's was wonderful get your reservations early sites go fast. Campsites you pay but for Native Americans day passes no fee.

Nice museum. CG was clean and other campers were quiet. Good idea to purchase the interpretive booklets for the sites and hikes. The 13 mile dirt road getting to Chaco is very washboarded. Go slow. It took me an hour to go 13 miles in my truck/camper rig. Very sacred area. Travel with respect and reverence.

I loved that the bathrooms were heated. On a cold night I was ready to sleep in there instead of our tent, lol!

Camp host was wonderful, stopped several times for great Anasazi information from the ranger—showed us a turkey feather blanket, recommended two wonderful hikes (favorite was the South Mesa trail). Campground had 5 five star super clean restrooms: purified water, flush toilets, heater, utility sink!

the campground is well maintained.

Star-gazing delight! Ranger discussion was helpful but too bad restrictions on telescope due to COVID.
For folks with poor vision a low powered light outside the restroom would be helpful as it is pitch black. Camp sites are good and spacious enough for tents, small RV or car-camping.

Great camp hosts and rangers. All trails lead to amazing places.

Great stay. If there is inclement weather, beware of the roads to Chaco. Not always easily accessible.

We had a great time. The campsites are fairly exposed and there is very little privacy. It's a beautiful setting regardless. One day was not enough. It was just enough to get the main canyon explored but there was so much more. There are trails that allow bikes to go further out there, wish we had brought ours to explore the further reaches of the park. The road from the south is rough but passable, we underestimated the time it would take to drive the 20 mile stretch of dirt road and watch out for the cattle grates they can have some severe ledges. We are coming back.
