The nicest forest service campground near Red River, NM. This is in a narrow canyon with Columbine Creek running through the middle. Lots of tree cover and shade in the upper loop, but if you like the sun, stay in the lower loop. Because of the canyon walls, the sun hits the canyon later in the morning and sets earlier in the evening. Good access to the Columbine /Hondo Wilderness trails. The road and spurs are all paved. Campground hosts (Roger and Gwen) do a fantastic job of keeping the campground clean, especially the bathrooms. Most of the sites can be reserved, there are FCFS sites that are available, but get here Thursday or early Friday to secure one of those.

Reserved site #12, but it was extremely unlevel and had both a tree and a rock which were in the way of slide outs. Had to move to another site the next day.

Excellent place to camp by the river and plenty of hiking, trail running, biking and UTV activities in the area.
Great gift shops and places to eat.

We have stayed here many times through the years and have always had a great experience. The campground consists of two loops in Columbine Canyon, one large and one small. All of the sites and road are paved. Columbine Creek runs through the middle of the campgrounds upper loop and can be heard from the campsites. The smaller loop at the bottom of the canyon is closer to the Red River and has very little shade but level sites. It is also close to the highway, so highway noise is a problem. The larger loop heads up the canyon and therefore away from the river and highway noise, the farther up you go the quieter it becomes. These sites have good amounts of shade from Pnderosa Pines, Douglas Firs, and Aspen. The Bathroom facilities are modern and always clean and water spigots are conveniently spaced. Keep in mind that Columbine canyon is a narrow canyon with high walls and so depending on which side of the campground you are on, the sun comes over the walls late morning and goes down over the walls mid afternoon. At the top of the upper loop is a parking area for the trailhead for the Columbine Creek trail, which heads further up the canyon. It is a nice, beautiful hike along the creek. The town of Red River is only eight miles away and of all of the Forest Service campgrounds along the Red River, this is the best one in my opinion. For that reason, reservations are highly recommended.
