Cimarron campground used to be a wonderful escape, but it is turning into a ghetto. Massive RVs with loud music and gas powered generators now outnumber tent campers 5 to 1. If you go there to listen to the elk bugling you are more likely to hear generators and barking dogs, even during the quiet hours of 10 pm to 8 am. Why they even bother leaving home is a mystery. There are probably better choices by finding forest service roads impassable to RVs and long trailers. Plenty of those in Carson National Forest. The Valle Vidal is truly one of NMs treasures and worth visiting. But if you go to Cimarron campground don’t expect peace and quiet.

Had a good experience here. We were the only ones camping and it appears that this facility is popular during the elk hunting season. If you drive the Loop Road near the campground I would recommend turning around where it heads east from the Rock Wall. Not much of interest beyond that.
The region is beautiful with very low impact from visitors. The campground host does a fantastic job of upkeep on the facility. Forest Service was having problems with getting the water lines charged and water at the facility would be very nice to have.
The road in is not a problem, just make sure you are traveling with E-rated tires and plan on an hour and a half from US Highway 64 near Cimarron.
This was a great place to spend four nights, but will probably forego returning just because we want to explore other regions.
We stayed in an off-road trailer with roof top tent.
